I noticed during a flash-based chat program (spreed.com) that no sound was being detected from me. After much googling and experimenting, I am unable to get the internal microphone working on this laptop. 

Actually, the microphone works, but the sound is SO FAINT that the only thing I can hear is when I thump on the laptop. So, the sound level is useless.

This is an UI issue. Newer versions of gnome-volume-control now allow to increase the volume digitally beyond the device's hardware possibilities which is what is needed here.

in my sony vaio no sound is captured by onboard microphone, in fedora 10 and fedora 11.
I've installed many sound control and many patch. Nothing.

I get A similar bug on CentOs 6.2 and find a by pass using alsamixer to unmute the microphone.After unmuting with Alsamixer, the Gnome interface works well.
