Description Tom London 2009-03-03 10:32:15 EST
Description of problem:
After today's rawhide update and rebooting, I notice that my encrypted root partition is being mounted twice.

Notice below that I have entries for both /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 and for /dev/dm-1. These are mounts to the same physical device.

Note that the label for /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 is F10-Snap2-x86_64, the same as for /dev/dm-1.

I believe that "bad things" can happen if the same device is mounted rw twice....

I immediately unmount /dev/dm-1.....

[root@tlondon ~]# mount
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 on / type ext3 (rw,noatime,nodiratime)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)
/dev/sda3 on /boot type ext3 (rw,noatime,nodiratime)
tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
tmpfs on /tmp type tmpfs (rw)
none on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw)
sunrpc on /var/lib/nfs/rpc_pipefs type rpc_pipefs (rw)
gvfs-fuse-daemon on /home/tbl/.gvfs type fuse.gvfs-fuse-daemon (rw,nosuid,nodev,user=tbl)
/dev/dm-1 on /media/F10-Snap2-x86_64 type ext3 (rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=devkit)
[root@tlondon ~]# e2label /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00

Comment 1 David Zeuthen 2009-03-03 12:19:47 EST
Interesting. I thought that I had worked around all the issues with device-mapper (the problem is that device-mapper creates devices on it's own).

Please attach the output of

 1. devkit-disks --enumerate

 2. For each /devices/dm-* in the output of 1, please attach the output of

    devkit-disks --show-info /devices/XYZ

where XYZ is the dm-* device

 3. ls -l /dev/dm-*

 4. ls -l /dev/mapper/*

 5. cat /proc/mounts

 6. cat /etc/mtab

Thanks.
Comment 2 Tom London 2009-03-03 13:11:18 EST
OK.... Here is the info you requested (with an extra getfacl on /dev/dm-*.

I ran this after I unmounted the "extra mount" and after I mounted a second encrypted partition (/dev/sda2).

Interestingly, although mounts shows this partition properly mounted (/media/extra, /dev/dm-3, the gnome desktop shows an icon with the wrong label (it shows "F10-Snap2-x86_64" instead of "extra". "F10-Snap2-x86_64" is the label for the root).

I will also rerun this with the duplicate mount (I have to log off/log on) to get that.

Comment 4 Tom London 2009-03-03 13:41:03 EST
Probably noise, but I notice that "mount" reports dm-1 mounted with "uhelper=devkit", while dm-3 is mounted with "uhelper=hal".

dm-3 (/dev/sda2) is Luks encrypted. dm-1 is also Luks encrypted, but decrypted/mounted via plymouth.

Both dm-1 and dm-3 are protected with the same passphrase.

Ah, I can see what's wrong here. What is the output of 'ls -l /dev/root'?

OK, I can reproduce this. Working on a fix.

Btw, wrt to both HAL and DeviceKit-disks mounting devices, this is a bit weird. What desktop environment / file manager are you using
Comment 8 Tom London 2009-03-03 15:22:04 EST
gdm/gnome/nautilus/...

Believe stock rawhide:

gdm-2.25.2-8.fc11.x86_64
nautilus-2.25.92-1.fc11.x86_64

A bit more detail on my setup:

I installed F10-Snap2 onto an encrypted root.

Sometime later, I wanted to extend that FS onto another partition, that is, I wanted to extend the lvm to use /dev/sda2. This proved difficult, and it was recommended on fedora-test that I setup /dev/sda2 as a separate encrypted ext3 FS with the same passphrase. This way, plymouth would be "smart enough" to mount it.

Indeed the above works.

But, it seems to add about 15 seconds to the boot (as shown by bootchart).

So I've been trying to figure out how to get this "moved" later. I've done this by commenting out the entries in /etc/crypttab and /etc/fstab.

This indeed makes boot about 10-15 seconds faster, but I haven't yet gotten system to "automagically" mount this second encrypted partition. Looks like I can manually mount it via "gnome-mount -d /dev/sda2" sometimes.

That is how I mounted /dev/sda2 prior to logging out/in. When I logged in, it seemed to automagically mount.

Sorry for the long story.....
Comment 9 David Zeuthen 2009-03-03 16:37:24 EST
OK, this should be fixed in DeviceKit-003-2.fc11, here's the build

http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=1218330

Please reopen if this doesn't fix it. Thanks.
Comment 10 Tom London 2009-03-03 16:53:46 EST
I can confirm that it appears to fix....

Thanks!
