Clearly (to the user) any font name beginning with "times" should return a Serif font. eg: fc-match times fc-match "times roman" fc-match "times new roman" fc-match "times-roman" fc-match "times-new-roman"
What makes you think 'fc-match "times roman"' should match a serif font? There are two relevant names, one is "times", the other is "times new roman". There is no such family named "times roman".
