Description Cristian Ciupitu 2009-05-15 13:39:56 UTC
Description of problem:
Audacious can not play WAV files. I have tried both
http://www.nch.com.au/acm/11k16bitpcm.wav and http://www.nch.com.au/acm/8kmp38.wav with the same result.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
audacious-1.5.1-5.fc10.i386.rpm

How reproducible:
Every time.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Download the files
2. Start audacious
3. Try to add the files

Actual results:
The files are not loaded in the play list.

Expected results:
The files should be loaded in the play list and be playable.

Additional info:
aplay can play the PCM encoded WAV file.

I have also installed the following packages:

This contains Microsoft ADPCM data, which typically need a special decoder library. Most WAV players can only play RAW/unencoded. [Other tools like aplay and sox can decode this.]

This contains MP3 data. Audacious plays it fine here.

> libsndfile

Isn't used. Actually it's disabled in the build since 2006 with a comment that it would cause an unpausable WAV plugin to be built. With libsndfile, Audacious could play MS ADPCM WAV files.

[...]

Audacious 1.5.1 is a legacy release. One would need to check whether the new 2.x stable releases include an improved WAV plugin. Else it would need a trade-off decision whether to build with libsndfile nevertheless...

Fix committed to devel (currently F-12). Not clear yet whether/when this fix may be backported to F-10 or F-11.

Comment 3 Cristian Ciupitu 2009-06-04 19:41:11 UTC
Ok. Thank you.
Is there anything I can do to help with the development/testing process?

Comment 4 Michael Schwendt 2009-06-04 20:05:28 UTC
Well, the more people with interest, the better. There's a thread at
https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-devel-list/2009-June/msg00188.html
where the Fedora Audacious packages have been orphaned. I've just started
with taking a look at the build requirements, the spec file, and open bugs.

Meanwhile somebody could prepare Audacious 2 packages for the Fedora package review process and see whether they can coexist with the legacy 1.5 Audacious.
