Installing mpich2 overwrites the alternatives installed by openmpi.

The use of mpich should be done only via environment-modules..

I think you must be wanting to use it if you install it (after openmpi is already installed). And of course you can reset the alternative to point back to openmpi.
There are no plans ATM to make mpich2 use environment modules only.
