Description David Tonhofer 2009-07-16 11:09:10 UTC
Description of problem:

We have an older barebones VIA Nehemiah-based board (vintage 2005). Graphics are based on the CLE266 North Bridge Integrated UniChrome 2D/3D Processor.

Installation of Fedora+KDE proceeds smoothly. After firstboot, I am presented with the GDM (or is the KDE Greeter?) login screen.

Login fails for root or "the other user". Every time, the login screen disappears, Fedora seems to cogitate a minute or so, showing the animated Fedora logo, then the screen goes black (X11 restarts?) then the login screen comes back. "Failsafe session" doesn't help either.

Selecting "Console Menu" on the "Menu" has the same effect. After a minute or so, the login screen comes back.

CTRL-ALT-FXX deosn't bring up the console either (didn't that used to work back in the 90's? oh well)

Unfortunately the network has not been configured yet, so remote login is right out. Gotta go to the rescue CD or something.

Comment 1 David Tonhofer 2009-07-19 21:23:07 UTC
Additional info:

1) Booted to runlevel 3 (non-graphical mode; press a key at boot, then the boot options edit screen comes up; add a "3" at the end of the "kernel" line, then press "b" to continue boot)

2) Once the system is up, logged in, then dumped xorg.conf with:

   Xorg -configure :1

The resulting file is attached. The exact name of the graphic hardware is:

"VT8623 [Apollo CLE266] integrated CastleRock graphics"

The log file doesn't contain anything suspicious at first sight. Maybe try to disable acceleration ?
Option "NoAccel"

You should also try the driver from updates-testing and see if it helps.
yum --enablerepo=updates-testing update xorg-x11-drv-openchrome

Comment 5 Xavier Bachelot 2009-09-23 10:18:01 UTC
David, are you still around ?

Comment 6 David Tonhofer 2009-09-23 21:07:20 UTC
Hi Xavier - Yes I am.

Haven't had time to work on this yet. I can look at it over the weekend, if that's ok.

Comment 7 Matěj Cepl 2009-11-05 18:34:59 UTC
Since this bugzilla report was filed, there have been several major updates in various components of the Xorg system, which may have resolved this issue. Users who have experienced this problem are encouraged to upgrade their system to the latest version of their packages. For packages from updates-testing repository you can use command

yum upgrade --enablerepo='*-updates-testing'

Alternatively, you can also try to test whether this bug is reproducible with the upcoming Fedora 12 distribution by downloading LiveMedia of F12 Beta available at http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/nightly-composes/ . By using that you get all the latest packages without need to install anything on your computer. For more information on using LiveMedia take a look at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraLiveCD .

Please, if you experience this problem on the up-to-date system, let us now in the comment for this bug, or whether the upgraded system works for you.

If you won't be able to reply in one month, I will have to close this bug as INSUFFICIENT_DATA. Thank you.

[This is a bulk message for all open Fedora Rawhide Xorg-related bugs. I'm adding myself to the CC list for each bug, so I'll see any comments you make after this and do my best to make sure every issue gets proper attention.]

Comment 8 Stephen E Clark 2009-12-01 14:13:24 UTC
Hello,
I am having the same problem. When I try to log into a kde session on F12 the session starts then fails after the largest circle is displayed - then X restarts.
I tried F10 live kde CD works, F11 and F12 live kde CDs fails. I have updated to the latest F12 as of 12/01/09. The problem still exists.

Gnome works fine, also if I start a vncserver and have startkde in my xstart file - then kde session works - which to me means it is somehow related to openchrome driver.

Also I have set selinux to disabled.

I was able to work around the problem by adding the following to my xorg.conf file.
Section "ServerFlags"
    Option "AIGLX" "off"
EndSection
