Description Christopher A. Williams 2010-04-02 15:41:30 UTC
Description of problem:
nspluginwrapper causes certain scripts in web pages to fail or not load at all. Examples of pages with this problem include the Flash video player at http://foxnews.com (try playing any video).

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
nspluginwrapper-1.3.0-10.fc12 (both 32-bit and 64-bit versions)

How reproducible:
Consistently

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Make sure nspluginwrapper is installed
2. Go to example site such as http://foxnews.com
3. Select any video link
4. Video player fails to play video

Actual results:
Video player fails to play video and instead appears to hang

Expected results:
Video player should load and play videos

Additional info:
Discussion thread of fedora-list also noted the following information:

The script used on Fox News website to embed video is:
<script type="text/javascript"
src="http://video.foxnews.com/v/embed.js?id=4106724&w=400&h=249"></script><noscript>Watch
the latest news video at <a
href="http://video.foxnews.com/">video.foxnews.com</a></noscript>

The embed.js script that is called above contains the following line:
if(document.domain.indexOf('rightscoop') < 0) { document.write(''); }

De-installing nspluginwrapper allows the video play to perform normally on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of F12. There is also anecdotal evidence that nspluginwrapper may be interfering with other embedded objects as well.

Comment 1 sawrub 2010-04-03 04:10:45 UTC
De-installing nspluginwrapper played the video successfully on 64-bit

Comment 2 Jim Gribbin 2010-04-25 08:11:37 UTC
I can confirm that de-installing nspluginwrapper allows my 32 bit F12 box to play these videos as well.

Comment 3 Christopher A. Williams 2010-05-10 12:24:01 UTC
Not certain how to add this, but the same issue also appears on F13. De-installing nspluginwrapper also resolves the problem with this version.

Comment 4 Martin Stransky 2010-05-12 13:38:23 UTC
It's even broken on latest trunk with oopp.

Comment 5 Christopher A. Williams 2010-07-07 13:45:46 UTC
Is anyone going top bother picking up this bug? It's been in new status since it was originally reported - 3 months ago!

Now that Adobe has pulled the 64-bit Flash plugin, nspluginwrapper is necessary. This needs to be escalated and fixed.

Comment 6 Jonathan Kamens 2010-07-07 14:01:32 UTC
I cannot reproduce this issue.

Comment 7 Christopher A. Williams 2010-07-07 15:06:12 UTC
Based on Jonathan's additional commentary on fedoralist (not included in his "can't reproduce the issue" comment), I think we have a work-around or possible solution.

Jonathan noted on fedoralist that he followed the Fedoraproject wiki on installing Flash and things worked. I reviewed that page and found that the wiki calls for installing several supporting 32-bit packages that are not otherwise necessarily installed in the 64-bit version. These include alsa-plugins-pulseaudio.i686 which also pulls in 9 additional 32-bit packages (at least in my case). Those 9 additional packages were the 32-bit versions of:

alsa-lib
flac
libXtst
libasyncns
libogg
libsndfile
libvorbis
pulseaudio-libs
tcp_wrappers-libs

After installing this missing package and its dependent packages, the 32-bit plugin works.

So it seems the 32-bit plugin may be looking for the 32-bit version of the pulseaudio-alsa compatibility connector and, if it doesn't find it, simply hangs.

I suggest others validate that alsa-plugins-pulseaudio.i686 and it's dependent packages are installed and re-test with the 32-bit plugin.

Comment 8 Christopher A. Williams 2010-07-07 16:00:55 UTC
Also note that the following is for installing the 32-bit plugin only.

It does NOT appear to resolve the issue with the 64-bit plugin. Since Adobe has temporarily pulled the 64-bit plugin, I would put this issue on hold for now until they release an updated version (as they say they are going to in the future).

Comment 9 Jim Gribbin 2010-07-07 22:42:08 UTC
I just tried nspluginswrapper again after making certain the packages mentioned in Comment 7 were installed. I seem to be able to watch the foxnews videos that I was unable to watch before with this plugin installed.

I am reluctant to say that these packages have anything to do with it as:
  1) how do I confirm what plugin is being used?
  2) I did not install these packages to try out this fix. They were already installed and I don't know when. I'm not certain they weren't in there when I was trying this before (maybe the order things are installed?).

When I go to "about:plugins" in Firefox and look at the nspluginswrapper entry, it looks odd to me.
  MIME Type = unknown/mime-type
  Desription = Do not open
  Suffixes  = none
  Enabled = Yes

Does that "Do not open" mean that this plugin is not whats opening the video and something else is? I don't know.

This message is a reminder that Fedora 12 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 12. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '12'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 12's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 12 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 11 Christopher A. Williams 2010-11-03 19:49:08 UTC
Given F12 EOL, that later versions of Fedora don't seem to have this problem, and that Adobe has re-released a 64-bit Flash plugin, I suggest this bug be closed as Won't Fix. It's no longer necessary

Comment 12 Bug Zapper 2010-12-03 16:26:41 UTC
Fedora 12 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2010-12-02. Fedora 12 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
