RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description Michal Haško 2010-07-15 14:44:25 UTC
Description of problem:
Booting up guest windows xp machine without sound support is just fine, but passing the "-soundhw all" option to qemu-kvm makes the guest crash just when the initial windows logo with progressbar finishes and welcome screen is to be presented.

The complete server command:
/usr/libexec/qemu-kvm -vga qxl -m 1024 -spice port=3001,disable-ticketing -usbdevice tablet /dev/virtual/win-xp-professional-x86 -soundhw all

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Host: RHEL 6.0 snap7
Guest: Windows XP with SP3
Client: localhost spice client (RHEL 6.0 snap7)

$ rpm -qa spice* qemu-kvm
spice-server-0.4.2-14.el6.x86_64
qemu-kvm-0.12.1.2-2.94.el6.x86_64
spice-client-0.4.2-15.el6.x86_64

How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install guest Windows XP with SP3
2. Install spice drivers for windows in guest
3. # /usr/libexec/qemu-kvm -vga qxl -m 1024 -spice port=3001,disable-ticketing -usbdevice tablet <guest_image> -soundhw all
4. # /usr/libexec/spicec -h localhost -p 3001

Actual results:
Windows crash during boot-up, qemu-kvm prints out "I/O possible"

Expected results:
Windows should boot up just fine, sound should be working

Comment 1 Uri Lublin 2010-07-15 15:20:33 UTC
Try changing the qemu-kvm command line by replacing "-soundhw all" with "-soundhw ac97".

Comment 3 RHEL Program Management 2010-07-15 15:38:14 UTC
This issue has been proposed when we are only considering blocker
issues in the current Red Hat Enterprise Linux release. It has
been denied for the current Red Hat Enterprise Linux release.

** If you would still like this issue considered for the current
release, ask your support representative to file as a blocker on
your behalf. Otherwise ask that it be considered for the next
Red Hat Enterprise Linux release. **

No, still the same issue.

Comment 5 Uri Lublin 2010-08-10 15:05:40 UTC
1. I can not reproduce the crash.
Does it crash when not using spice as well ?
/usr/libexec/qemu-kvm -m 1024 -usbdevice tablet /dev/virtual/win-xp-professional-x86 -soundhw all (or soundhw ac97)

It it still crashes, this may be a qemu-kvm bug.
Or maybe some required packages are missing.

2. Please try setting the following environment variable (assuming bash):
export QEMU_AUDIO_DRV=spice

Comment 6 Uri Lublin 2010-08-11 09:17:20 UTC
Unrelated to the crash mentioned in this bug, I think we should add in qemu-kvm an early setenv("QEMU_AUDIO_DRV", "spice") when spice is used (-spice in the command line).

Comment 7 Michal Haško 2010-08-11 09:34:07 UTC
I don't understand how, but the sound works for me now (with&without spice)
I started spice server using following command:
sudo /usr/libexec/qemu-kvm -m 1024 -spice port=3001,disable-ticketing -usbdevice tablet -soundhw all /dev/virtual/xp

Did you set the QEMU_AUDIO_DRV environment variable as mentioned in Comment 5 ?
Did you yum install <packages> ? if yes, maybe one of them was missing, which
caused the crash.
