Description Mike Eskenazi 2010-09-02 18:18:30 UTC
Created attachment 442692 [details]
list of installed packages.

Description of problem:

When booting Fedora using kernel 2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64, no log-in prompt appears. I am using NVIDIA video drivers so I have a text-mode colored bar appear that fills in from left to right (instead of the Fedora drop.) The bar should fill and then fade, and then the standard log-in should appear. It does not. If I switch the run-level setting in /etc/inittab from 5 to 3, I am able to boot correctly to a shell prompt. (I boot the system from a Live-USB, mount my Fedora boot drive, and edit the file.) When I boot using run-level 5 and enter verbose mode (I press F11 while the bar is filling) the system does not report [OK] when starting the "jexec" service, does not start any other services, and does not print anything else. Switching back to the previous kernel 2.6.33.8-149.fc13.x86_64 by editing /boot/grub/grub.conf so that default=1 allows me to boot my system normally. (I can only edit grub.conf when booting from my system in run-level3, not the Live_USB.)

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

faulty: 2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64
still good: 2.6.33.8-149.fc13.x86_64

How reproducible:

I downloaded the new kernel in an update on 1 September 2010, and the system produced the error upon rebooting. Please see the attached list of installed packages; perhaps there is a conflict lurking in there somewhere.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. install the 2.6.34.6-47.fc13.x86_64 kernel
2. ASSUMPTION: install all the other packages listed in the attachment
3. reboot

Actual results:

system does not allow log-in with run-level 5.

Expected results:

system should allow log-in through the GUI, along with all normal GUI functionality.

Additional info:

Please see the attached package list. I can provide more information if this would help anyone with their debugging.

Comment 1 Rafael Louback Ferraz 2010-09-03 02:43:34 UTC
Also noticed in x86

Comment 2 Chuck Ebbert 2010-09-03 11:41:54 UTC
Does it also fail with the nouveau drivers instead of nvidia?

Also, please try adding "pci=nocrs" to the kernel boot options.

And provide the output of the "lspci -vnn" command.

Comment 3 Rafael Louback Ferraz 2010-09-03 16:44:47 UTC
Im using proprietary driver...

the pci=nocrs option is to run in nouveau or nvidia drivers?

Comment 4 Sanjeev Premi 2010-09-04 16:49:54 UTC
I see the failure with Intel i915 driver on x86_64 as well.

I also notice that NUMLOCK led on the keyboard goes off when runlevel 5 starts.

We can't help you with problems with the nVidia driver because we don't have the source code for it.

Comment 6 Rafael Louback Ferraz 2010-09-06 15:43:18 UTC
This is happening only with nvidia driver?

Comment 7 Mike Eskenazi 2010-09-06 17:12:39 UTC
Original poster here...

I tried adding the pci=nocrs to the kernel boot options in grub.conf. I also attempted to disable the the NVIDIA drivers by performing the following actions:
*removed the "rdblacklist=nouveau" from the kernel boot options
*relocated the "/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-installer-disable-nouveau.conf" file that the NVIDIA installer adds

When I rebooted the machine, it still froze in the same place. The Fedora drop still did not appear. I'm not sure that I have completely disabled the NVIDIA drivers. I will continue to attempt to disable the drivers, and reboot the machine that way.

Similar behaviour with Intel G41 as well. See comment #4 above. If this one is CLOSED; should I open a new bug one specific to this chipset.

Comment 9 Rafael Louback Ferraz 2010-09-10 19:11:12 UTC
still reproducible in kernel 2.6.34.6.53

Comment 10 Rafael Louback Ferraz 2010-10-05 02:56:23 UTC
I could fix it adding vmalloc=256MB in the respect kernel line on /etc/grub.conf

shouldnt fedora find the right vmalloc size automatically?

Comment 11 Rafael Louback Ferraz 2010-10-23 17:33:36 UTC
This is a bug in kernel or not? Im seeing that in nvidia README file in chapter 9 (Known Issues) that is a exaustion in the mapped memory... should the kernel find the right memory?
