RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description IBM Bug Proxy 2010-09-13 16:32:21 UTC
1. Feature Overview:
Feature Id: [66899]
a. Name of Feature: [6.1 FEAT] 64 bit register support in 31 bit emulation - GCC
b. Feature Description
This feature allows to exploit 64 bit registers in 32 bit applications when running on System z
hardware.

32 bit code compiled to run exclusively on 64 bit hardware (-m31 -mzarch) can make use of 64 bit
registers while sustaining ABI compatibility with other 32 bit code. Code which would otherwise need
register pairs to deal with 64 bit values coupled with the more expensive cpu instructions can
instead make use of instruction working on 64 bit registers directly. This will significantly
increase the performance of 32 bit code compiled that way.

2. Feature Details:
Sponsor: LTC zSeries BOE
Architectures:
  zSeries - 31/32 compat, zSeries - 64 native,

Arch Specificity: purely arch specific code
Affects Kernel Modules: Field does not exist
Delivery Mechanism: Backport
Category: other
Request Type: Toolchain - Enhancement from IBM
d. Upstream Acceptance: Field does not exist
Sponsor Priority P1
f. Severity: ship issue
IBM Confidential: No
Code Contribution: IBM code
g. Component Version Target:
---

3. Business Case
ISVs and customers will benefit from major performance improvements and less cpu cost, which in turn
will result of more efficient usage of the System z HW and customer satisfaction.

Jakub Jelinek indicated that this feature is too invasive for inclusion into RHEL 6.1. So I'm not working on backports for this feature anymore. In case the situation changed please tell me asap otherwise please reject the feature.

Comment 5 John Jarvis 2010-11-23 22:03:06 UTC
Closing as WONTFIX based on Jakub's feedback.
