RHEL Engineering is moving the tracking of its product development work on RHEL 6 through RHEL 9 to Red Hat Jira (issues.redhat.com). If you're a Red Hat customer, please continue to file support cases via the Red Hat customer portal. If you're not, please head to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira and file new tickets here. Individual Bugzilla bugs in the statuses "NEW", "ASSIGNED", and "POST" are being migrated throughout September 2023. Bugs of Red Hat partners with an assigned Engineering Partner Manager (EPM) are migrated in late September as per pre-agreed dates. Bugs against components "kernel", "kernel-rt", and "kpatch" are only migrated if still in "NEW" or "ASSIGNED". If you cannot log in to RH Jira, please consult article #7032570. That failing, please send an e-mail to the RH Jira admins at rh-issues@redhat.com to troubleshoot your issue as a user management inquiry. The email creates a ServiceNow ticket with Red Hat. Individual Bugzilla bugs that are migrated will be moved to status "CLOSED", resolution "MIGRATED", and set with "MigratedToJIRA" in "Keywords". The link to the successor Jira issue will be found under "Links", have a little "two-footprint" icon next to it, and direct you to the "RHEL project" in Red Hat Jira (issue links are of type "https://issues.redhat.com/browse/RHEL-XXXX", where "X" is a digit). This same link will be available in a blue banner at the top of the page informing you that that bug has been migrated.

Description IBM Bug Proxy 2010-09-13 16:46:23 UTC
1. Feature Overview:
Feature Id: [66900]
a. Name of Feature: [6.1 FEAT] 64 bit register support in 31 bit emulation - Binutils
b. Feature Description
This feature provides a binutils extension marks binaries compiled with -m31 -mzarch with a flag in
the ELF header. This allows us to perform a run-time check in order to prevent such binaries from
being executed on kernels not providing the highgprs facility.

The intention is to mark binaries built with -m31 -mzarch with the EF_S390_HIGH_GPRS flag in the
e_flags field of the elf header.

Compiling code with -m31 -mzarch will in the future exploit the presence of 64 bit registers also in
32 bit applications. This requires the kernel to save/restore the upper halfs of 64 bit registers
and include these values in core dumps. For S/390 the Linux kernel supports that starting with
version 2.6.32 and indicates that fact in /proc/cpuinfo as "highgprs" and in the AT_HWCAPS field of
the auxiliary vector with the HWCAP_S390_HIGH_GPRS flag.

2. Feature Details:
Sponsor: LTC zSeries BOE
Architectures:
  zSeries - 31/32 compat, zSeries - 64 native,

Arch Specificity: purely arch specific code

g. Component Version Target:
---

3. Business Case
ISVs and customers will benefit from major performance improvements and less cpu cost, which in turn
will result of more efficient usage of the System z HW and customer satisfaction.

Comment 2 Gonzalo Muelas Serrano 2010-09-22 14:30:32 UTC
The minimum binutils version including this feature is: binutils 2.20.51.0.6
So if the rebase asked in Bug 633574 (>=2.21) is done, there is no need for IBM to provide a backport for this feature.

Please let us know if you are rebasing binutils to inform the developers asap not to do the backport (they will start quite soon).

Thank you!

IBM is signed up to test and provide feedback. Setting OtherQA

Comment 4 John Jarvis 2010-09-23 17:38:55 UTC
This appears to be a binutils work item, switching component.

Code Upstream Status: Accepted

Comment 7 John Jarvis 2010-11-22 18:12:19 UTC
There are no plans to rebase binutils in RHEL 6.1, please proceed with
backports for RHBZs 631540, 633377 and 633448.

Comment 8 IBM Bug Proxy 2010-11-23 13:40:29 UTC
------- Comment From krebbel.ibm.com 2010-11-23 07:23 EDT-------
Jakub Jelinek indicated that this feature is too invasive for inclusion into RHEL 6.1. So I'm not working on backports for this feature anymore. In case the situation changed please tell me asap otherwise please reject the feature.

Comment 9 John Jarvis 2010-11-23 22:02:49 UTC
Closing as WONTFIX based on Jakub's feedback.
