Description Ralf Spenneberg 2010-10-20 01:07:42 EDT
Description of problem:
Any lvm2 management command fails with a core dump.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
device-mapper-libs-1.02.53-4.fc12.x86_64
lvm2-2.02.72-4.fc12.x86_64

How reproducible:
Every time

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Call any of these commands: vgscan, lvdisplay, vgdisplay, etc.
2.
3.

Actual results:
[root@kruemelmonster ~]# export LANG=C
[root@kruemelmonster ~]# vgscan
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
[root@kruemelmonster ~]# lvdisplay
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
[root@kruemelmonster ~]# vgdisplay
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
[root@kruemelmonster ~]# pvdisplay

Expected results:
Working command line utilities.

Additional info:
During boot they apparently work, because my system is built on encrypted luks with lvm.

dmesg display along the boot:

Comment 1 Ralf Spenneberg 2010-10-20 01:14:53 EDT
I just could isolate it to an external CD-Rom drive.

Whenever this USB device is connected to the system and turned on the commands fail.
# lvdisplay
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
As soon as the CD-Drive is turned off, the commands work again.

This is the CD-Drive:
usb 1-4.2.2: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 12
usb 1-4.2.2: New USB device found, idVendor=14cd, idProduct=6600

sr 9:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0

Did anything change in the kernel modules for that device? This did not happen with the older kernels. The CD-Drive has been attached and turned on all for several month running f12.

Kernel: kernel-2.6.32.21-168.fc12.x86_64
Comment 2 Ralf Spenneberg 2010-10-20 01:20:40 EDT
Just rebooted into 2.6.32.16-141.fc12.x86_64. No change. So the bug apparently is not kernel related.
Comment 3 Ralf Spenneberg 2010-10-20 01:31:58 EDT
It must be something between the specific driver and the lvm tools.

I just attached an external harddisk (different hardware, but apparently similar controller) and the commands dumped again on me. This is the hardware:

Again it is Super Top and the SerialNumber is not readable. Other external USB storage devices (i.e. JMicron) work fine.

Can you post vgscan -vvvv output and tar archive created by lvmdump (if possible)?
Comment 5 Ralf Spenneberg 2010-10-20 04:20:28 EDT
Sure. lvmdump is attached.
