Description Matěj Cepl 2010-11-10 15:59:27 UTC
Description of problem:
Whenever I shut down Eclipse (via File/Quit) I get java JVM running:
jakoubek:tmp $ pgrep -f -l java
32729 /usr/bin/java -Xms128m -Xmx384m -Dorg.eclipse.equinox.p2.reconciler.dropins.directory=/usr/share/eclipse/dropins -XX:CompileCommand=exclude,org/eclipse/core/internal/dtree/DataTreeNode,forwardDeltaWith -XX:CompileCommand=exclude,org/eclipse/jdt/internal/compiler/lookup/ParameterizedMethodBinding,<init> -XX:CompileCommand=exclude,org/eclipse/cdt/internal/core/dom/parser/cpp/semantics/CPPTemplates,instantiateTemplate -XX:CompileCommand=exclude,org/eclipse/cdt/internal/core/pdom/dom/cpp/PDOMCPPLinkage,addBinding -XX:CompileCommand=exclude,org/python/pydev/editor/codecompletion/revisited/PythonPathHelper,isValidSourceFile -XX:CompileCommand=exclude,org/python/pydev/ui/filetypes/FileTypesPreferencesPage,getDottedValidSourceFiles -XX:-UseCompressedOops -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -jar /usr/lib64/eclipse//plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.1.0.v20100507.jar -os linux -ws gtk -arch x86_64 -showsplash -launcher /usr/lib64/eclipse/eclipse -name Eclipse --launcher.library /usr/lib64/eclipse//plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.gtk.linux.x86_64_1.1.1.R36x_v20100810/eclipse_1309.so -startup /usr/lib64/eclipse//plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.1.0.v20100507.jar -exitdata 1900010 -vm /usr/bin/java -vmargs -Xms128m -Xmx384m -Dorg.eclipse.equinox.p2.reconciler.dropins.directory=/usr/share/eclipse/dropins -XX:CompileCommand=exclude,org/eclipse/core/internal/dtree/DataTreeNode,forwardDeltaWith -XX:CompileCommand=exclude,org/eclipse/jdt/internal/compiler/lookup/ParameterizedMethodBinding,<init> -XX:CompileCommand=exclude,org/eclipse/cdt/internal/core/dom/parser/cpp/semantics/CPPTemplates,instantiateTemplate -XX:CompileCommand=exclude,org/eclipse/cdt/internal/core/pdom/dom/cpp/PDOMCPPLinkage,addBinding -XX:CompileCommand=exclude,org/python/pydev/editor/codecompletion/revisited/PythonPathHelper,isValidSourceFile -XX:CompileCommand=exclude,org/python/pydev/ui/filetypes/FileTypesPreferencesPage,getDottedValidSourceFiles -XX:-UseCompressedOops -XX:MaxPermSize=256m -jar /usr/lib64/eclipse//plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.1.0.v20100507.jar

Any ideas how to debug it?

Comment 1 Matěj Cepl 2010-11-10 16:01:11 UTC
This JVM never goes away and when i start another instance of Eclipse I get just one more. In the end of Eclipse session working, I can have five or more JVMs running (which doesn't help to my computer in terms of memory and CPU utilization). The only way how to stop that JVM from running is

pkill -KILL -f java

(-TERM is not sufficient)

ISTR there being a problem in this area with accessibility enabled. Do you have it enabled?

The best chance for a solution to this is to try with an upstream build towards the next major version (4.2; we're going to try to ship this in F17):

http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops4/S-4.2M3-201110281100/download.php?dropFile=eclipse-SDK-4.2M3-linux-gtk.tar.gz

or

http://download.eclipse.org/eclipse/downloads/drops4/S-4.2M3-201110281100/download.php?dropFile=eclipse-SDK-4.2M3-linux-gtk.tar.gz

If you can reproduce it with that, then we can work with upstream on a solution. Thanks very much for your help with this, Matěj.

Yes, can easily reproduce with http://ftp.sh.cvut.cz/MIRRORS/eclipse/eclipse/downloads/drops4/S-4.2M3-201110281100/eclipse-SDK-4.2M3-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz (I needed a x86_64 build).

I'm not sure, but we could backport a fix for this once we get one.

Thanks for the excellent follow-through here! We'll watch the upstream report and backport as necessary.

As you wish.
