Description of problem: nm-applet is 2.6GB. The machine is largely unusable due to swapping. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): How reproducible: $ rpm -q -f /usr/bin/nm-applet NetworkManager-gnome-0.8.1-10.git20100831.fc13.i686 Steps to Reproduce: 1. login to a GNOME desktop in 2010-12 2. remain logged in doing work 3. observe the slow degradation of performance Actual results: nm-applet is 2.6GB Expected results: nm-applet should be trivial Additional info: (where is the SZ field?) $ ps -lef | head -1 F S UID PID PPID C PRI NI ADDR SZ WCHAN STIME TTY TIME CMD (What is the "going rate for applets these days in weight? ... 100MB seems the going weight of "light" applets these days) $ ps -lef | grep applet | sort -n -k 10 <not shown> (What is the weight of nm-applet?) $ ps -lef | sort -n -k 10 | tail -1 S wbaker 22428 22073 0 80 0 - 726419 poll_s 2010 ? 00:06:04 nm-applet --sm-disable SZ=726419 $ bc scale=6 726419*4096/1024^3 2.771068 2.77GB $ rpm -q -f /usr/bin/nm-applet NetworkManager-gnome-0.8.1-10.git20100831.fc13.i686 See also https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=666483 as nmcli has "issues" with the ra0 device driver (see bug). Thus there may be lotsa activity that NetworkManager is undertaking that one doesn't see in the logged-in state. $ /sbin/ifconfig -a eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0D:05:04:DF:13 inet addr:192.168.0.48 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: 2001:55c:4c15:7096:20d:5ff:fe04:df13/64 Scope:Global inet6 addr: fe80::20d:5ff:fe04:df13/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:728584314 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:447648017 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:3793022504 (3.5 GiB) TX bytes:1634790149 (1.5 GiB) Interrupt:27 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:4002630 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:4002630 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:344450107 (328.4 MiB) TX bytes:344450107 (328.4 MiB) pan0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr BA:B3:58:93:4E:70 BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b) ra0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 40:61:86:44:8B:32 inet addr:192.168.1.26 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0 inet6 addr: fe80::4261:86ff:fe44:8b32/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:62567266 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:12529679 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:1211899741 (1.1 GiB) TX bytes:241517084 (230.3 MiB) Interrupt:16

This message is a reminder that Fedora 13 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 13. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '13'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 13's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 13 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version, please add a comment here and someone will do it for you. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
Fedora 13 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2011-06-25. Fedora 13 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
