Description James 2011-02-05 21:18:07 UTC
Description of problem:
My normal configuration is a Dell E5500 in a docking station with the lid opened and an external Dell U2410 connected to the first DVI port. After installing Fedora 14 on this the graphics worked as expected. If I close the laptop lid, undock the laptop and then open the laptop again, the graphics still work normally.
However if I boot undocked, graphics performance is very slow from the moment the GUI starts. The effect is stuttering, working for about a second then freezing for about a second. Processor utilization is about 25%(via System monitor) but it is not clear which process is the cause. If I close the lid the system does not suspend correctly, as evidenced by HDD or fan continuing to spin(normally it goes silent). If dock the laptop and open he lid, the external monitor activates and displays only the cursor centered but the laptop screen remains blank. The laptop is always the primary display so it should display the taskbars.

There is no /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:
Boot Fedora 14 on a Dell E5500 undocked.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Undock Laptop
2. Boot
3. No need to login to see the effect

Actual results:
When undocked, like Quake on a 486

Expected results:
  Consistent performance

Additional Builds and Platforms:
This did not happen with Fedora 12 + KDE however display configuration in that case was not reliable. Performance was always fast.

Additional info:
Linux 2.6.35.10-74.fc14.x86_64
GNOME 2.32.0
Core 2 Duo
Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
Dell E-Port Plus Docking Station

Comment 1 James 2011-03-17 03:23:49 UTC
This behavior now occurs whenever the laptop is booted undocked.

It looks like dozens of instances of the program /usr/bin/gcm-apply are being run. I'm unable to kill any as any particular process has lifetime of about a few seconds. I was able to restore normal performance by becoming root and renaming gcm-apply to something else. After a few seconds the system graphics behave as expected.

This should be fixed in either F15 or F16, please reopen if that's not the case. Thanks.
