Description Jiri Skrabal 2011-02-23 10:28:30 UTC
Description of problem:

When looking at (changing to) any random message folder, very often evolution stops updating data in message view window and mail lists window. The UI pretend to be working, you can navigate in menu and do everything as usual. It just does not refresh data.

Status bar at the bottom continuously shows "Formatting message" message.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

evolution-2.32.1-1.fc14.x86_64

How reproducible:

randomly, often

Steps to Reproduce:
1. open evolution
2. try to work with it

Actual results:
No data refresh

Expected results:
data refresh

Thanks for a bug report. This is a known issue, it's usually either checking your address books for a sender or calendars for meeting appointments (or both). To be sure it would be good to get a backtrace of such "frozen" evolution.

Also check Edit->Preferences->Mail Preferences, tab HTML Messages, part Loading images (to not have checked "Load images only in messages from contacts") and tab Headers, there do not have checked "Show the photograph of sender in the message preview". These two options are usually making freezes.

Hi Milan,

thanks for your reply. Could you please help me with the backtrace generation? The thing is that evolution usually does not crash - it just keeps doing something. It normally shuts down when I close it. Or did you mean anything else by that backtrace?

For those options - both are disabled.

I also did back up old emails from my inbox and reduced its size from approximately 7 thousand messages to 2.5 thousands. Since that time I haven't experienced that behaviour again (but it is only like half a day :)

Folder size may not have any impact on a speed of message formatting, once the folder is loaded and shown it should be, more or less, instant to select the message and get the content once the message is retrieved.

You can get backtrace by command like this:
   $ gdb --batch --ex "t a a bt" -pid=PID &>/tmp/bt.txt
where PID is process ID of running evolution. Only make sure you'll have installed debug info packages for evolution-data-server, evolution, gtkhtml3 and any other evolution related packages you are using. Thanks in advance.

OK, this was not with debug info. And it looks to be running again. I'll try one more time as soon as I reproduce it again.

You've right, without debug info packages it's not so good, but anyway, most threads are idle, only thread 2 and thread 3 are doing something with folders, one is about to get a message where the second is updating folder content, most likely for the first time, which usually takes longer.

This scenario is quite common and the imap+ provider tries to solve this by checking for new messages in chunks, not all in one, thus the request for a message gets processed earlier. There is nothing more we can do about this at the moment.

If you get other kind of freeze, which will be unrecoverable after the folder update is done, then it's another thing. By the way, with your backtrace you might not see "Formatting message", but "Retrieving message" in the status bar and preview panel.

Hi Milan, after the inbox clean up it haven't happen again yet. You can close the bug if you want to.

OK, thanks for the update. It's pity if the local cache files breakage caused this.
