Description of problem:

In order to restart it, I have to killall thunderbird

Hmm.  I just successfully got it to close with Ctrl+Q.  No process left behind...

Well I just tried it again and thistime it worked.  So I will go with it is fixed for now.  I have seen it several times, I guess it could be a plugin that is causing it problems.  I am using lightning and enigmail
