Description of problem: The script "startx" is used to launch an X session from a tty. This script does not register the session as active with console-kit. As such the ACLs on sound devices are not correctly set in the graphical session. This issue has been patched in Mandriva/Mageia http://svn.mandriva.com/cgi-bin/viewvc.cgi/packages/cooker/xinit/current/SOURCES/xinit-1.1.0-poke-ck.patch?revision=366689&view=markup As you can probably tell, my understanding of what's causing this issue is limited. I've been helpfully pointed at the above Mandriva patch by one of the pulseaudio devs.
