Description George Iosif 2011-03-23 08:05:02 UTC
Description of problem:
After installing the latest updates available for Fedora rawhide and rebooting, the system would not complete the boot process (no login prompt at the console) and would become unusable.
At that stage, when hitting CTRL+ALT+DEL, the reboot process would start but never complete, forcing the user to power off the machine from the power button.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
selinux-policy-3.9.16-5.fc15.noarch
selinux-policy-targeted-3.9.16-5.fc15.noarch
rsyslog-5.7.9-1.fc15.x86_64

How reproducible:
Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install the latest Fedora rawhide updates.
2. Reboot.
3.

Actual results:
Boot process hangs.

Expected results:
Boot process completes and displays a login prompt.

Additional info:
I tested this in both runlevels 5 and 3, and the result was the same.
However, when booting in rescue mode (runlevel 1):
1. if I just ran "telinit 3", the problem would reappear;
2. if I first ran "setenforce 0" followed by "telinit 3", then everything will work just fine.

On this second scenario, I looked in the audit.log file and I could see the following lines:
type=AVC msg=audit(1300826339.023:12): avc:  denied  { sys_nice } for  pid=927 comm="rsyslogd" capability=23  scontext=system_u:system_r:syslogd_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:system_r:syslogd_t:s0 tclass=capability
type=AVC msg=audit(1300826339.023:12): avc:  denied  { setsched } for  pid=927 comm="rsyslogd" scontext=system_u:system_r:syslogd_t:s0 tcontext=system_u:system_r:syslogd_t:s0 tclass=process
type=SYSCALL msg=audit(1300826339.023:12): arch=c000003e syscall=144 success=yes exit=0 a0=3b8 a1=0 a2=7fe8ab75ed38 a3=7fe8ab75e9d0 items=0 ppid=1 pid=927 auid=4294967295 uid=0 gid=0 euid=0 suid=0 fsuid=0 egid=0 sgid=0 fsgid=0 tty=(none) ses=4294967295 comm="rsyslogd" exe="/sbin/rsyslogd" subj=system_u:system_r:syslogd_t:s0 key=(null)

On running an "audit2allow -M ..." against those lines and inserting the policy module and then rebooting, everything started working again.

Best regards,
George Iosif

Comment 2 George Iosif 2011-03-23 20:38:14 UTC
I can confirm that with the new SELinux policy version (3.9.16-6), all works as expected.

Thanks!

Best regards,
George Iosif

Could you update the karma. Thank you.

I've just done that.

Comment 5 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-07 20:25:57 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
