Description Dag 2011-03-29 14:18:21 UTC
Description of problem:
Only one netspeed applet can run at a time on Gnome panels.

I switched yesterday from Fedora 13 to Fedora 14.
On Fedora 13 I was able to run multiple instances of netspeed applet, one for each of my network card (wifi, bridge, ethernet, VPN), but now (on Fedora 14) I can only run one instance of Netspeed applet.
Each time I try to add another Netspeed applet on one Gnome panel, it fails stating "the panel encountered a problem when launching OAFIID:Gnome_NtespeedApplet".

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
gnome-applet-netspeed-0.16-5.fc14.x86_64
gnome-panel-2.32.0.2-2.fc14.x86_64
gnome-panel-libs-2.32.0.2-2.fc14.x86_64

I used to have this on Fedora 13 :
gnome-applet-netspeed-0.16-4.fc13.x86_64
gnome-panel-2.30.0-4.fc13.x86_64
gnome-panel-libs-2.30.0-4.fc13.x86_64

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. install Fedora 14
2. choose Gnome as desktop and open a session
3. in a gnome panel, add the netspeed applet
4. in a gnome panel (an other or the same as above), try to add another netspeed applet

Actual results:
Adding more than one netspeed applet in a gnome session fails.

Expected results:
Adding multiple netspeed applets on any gnome panel ought to be possible.

Additional info:
Adding multiple netspeed applets on gnome panels was possible in Fedora 13 and before.

regards,
Dag

I can only reproduce it on x86_64, where it used to work with F13 indeed. I can't reproduce it with i686.

gnome-applet-netspeed hasn't changed in any related way between F13 and F14. The only additional fix in release 5 of the package is for bug 647060 (ignore "bits instead of bytes" setting for Bytes in/out labels in Device Details dialog).

Could it be that there's a problem in F14 gnome-panel x86_64?

Comment 2 Michael Schwendt 2011-03-29 18:54:21 UTC
Further applets from a default install of F-14 x86_64, which refuse to be added with the same error message:

 dict lookup
 fast user switch
 gnote
 invest
 modem lights
 pilot
 pointer capture
 remote desktop viewer

Some from the gnome-panel package, others from gnome-applets or external packages.
This gives enough reason to assume that on x86_64, something is wrong with regard to applets.

Comment 3 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-16 15:32:53 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 14 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 14. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '14' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 14 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
