The problem can be worked around by disabling the MTP plugin in rythmbox

I'm experiencing this same issue reported by Gert. I'm using a Canon G10 digital camera. However, the problem does not occur when using other manufacturers cameras. Tested with a Nikon Coolpix S9 and Kodak Zi8 and both worked as expected. Also I would add that Rhythmbox does not need to be playing music, simply having it running with the MTP plugin enabled causes the problem.
Same problem with a Canon EOS 350D camera.
