Description Ian Pilcher 2011-04-09 19:58:57 UTC
Description of problem:
Sandy Bridge fun continues. I updated to xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.14.0-5.fc15
and started seeing a couple of problems when the KWin Translucency effect is
enabled:

1. When dragging windows rapidly around, I see "artifacts" left on the
    background.

2. GPU hangs accompanied by momentary "black screens" when the KDE
Notification applet tries to display a message (every time Firefox
finishes downloading a file, for example).

Downgrading back to xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.14.0-4.fc15.x86_64 makes these
problems go away.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
xorg-x11-drv-intel-2.14.0-5.fc15.x86_64

How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Fully updated Fedora 15 (including updates-testing).
2. Log in to KDE.
3. Enable KDE desktop effects.
4. Ensure "Translucency" effect is enabled in "All Effects" tab.
5. Download file with Firefox.

Actual results:
When file download finishes, Firefox will try to display message via
KDE Notifications applet. Screens will "flash" black and GPU hang
messages will appear in syslog.

Expected results:
No GPU hangs/black screens.

Additional info:
Why do I have the feeling I'm the only person in the world trying to use KDE
with Sandy Bridge graphics on Fedora 15?

Comment 1 Ian Pilcher 2011-04-09 21:07:13 UTC
It seems that intel-2.14.0-backports.patch is made up of several separate
git commits. I'd be happy to test them individually to see which one is
causing my problem, but I can't find any of them in the freedesktop.org
git tree. My git-fu is weak, so I may be doing something wrong.

Where/how can I find these individual commits?

Comment 2 Ian Pilcher 2011-04-10 00:26:02 UTC
I have no idea what is going on, but I can no longer reproduce this.
(Possibly one of my many reboots fixed it.)

Closing for now.
