Additional info:
My systems uses 2 x-screens so I can login as two different users. I have been doing this for years, but after the most recent round of redhat updates (around April 9, 2011), when I login to an x-screen, maybe 50% of the time the panels are empty, no icons present. I can kill all user processes to logoff, restart x, even reboot: none appear to fix the problem. without regard to what has happened before, about 50% of the time when logging in, the panel is blank.

Since this is a rather drastic chnage in behavior following a recent round of updates, the obviously conlcusion is those updates broke something.

My gnome panel also goes blank after completing the latest round of updates conducted on 13th April 2011 and the server is restarted. My server is running solely Red Hat Linux Enterprise version 5.0. Have posted the same problem that you have encounter to Red Hat Bugzilla. Hopefully can get a reply from them soon.

I would like to confirm that I am also experiencing this bug. I have three boxes that I am administering which show the described behavior in arch's post. The problem is very annoying.

The solution for me is to open a terminal and run the "killall gnome-panel command" (in some cases multiple times) to force gnome-panel to reload.

The version of gnome-panel installed is: gnome-panel-2.16.1-7.el5

This occurs in RHEL 5.5 and 5.6.

I have attached a crash report from the box running RHEL 5.5 x86.

I experienced this also. I had to kill gnome panel via terminal and then log back in and I got an gnome-panel bugreport (which I have attached) before I can see anything in gnome-panel. This was scary at first since there was no way to log off or do normal GUI functions but it is annoying now.

Comment 6 Frank 2011-04-14 23:34:07 UTC
I also sent this gnome project.

Is this a dup of 693882 since the problems seem to have started at about the time of the glibc update...

Comment 9 Gilles Detillieux 2011-04-25 20:28:55 UTC
Yes, I believe bug 697095 and bug 693882 are dups of this bug (or vice-versa), all caused by the glibc update earlier this month. It seems to affect RHEL 5.5 and 5.6. Not sure about earlier RHEL versions.

Comment 10 RHEL Program Management 2014-03-07 12:46:16 UTC
This bug/component is not included in scope for RHEL-5.11.0 which is the last RHEL5 minor release. This Bugzilla will soon be CLOSED as WONTFIX (at the end of RHEL5.11 development phase (Apr 22, 2014)). Please contact your account manager or support representative in case you need to escalate this bug.

Comment 11 Gilles Detillieux 2014-03-07 16:22:33 UTC
Although this bug report wasn't updated to reflect the fix, I'm quite sure this bug was fixed by a glibc update (glibc-2.5-58.el5_6.3 in errata https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2011-0466.html). See bug 693882, especially the comments by Troy Dawson, for details on the fix. The glibc bug introduced by a faulty patch in glibc-2.5-58.el5_6.2 affected both gnome-panel and evolution, and possibly other applications too, but was fixed years ago - about 3 weeks after the bug was introduced/released.
