Description of problem: Downloaded and installed the 4-14-2011 updates for Fedora 15 Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): How reproducible: yum update Steps to Reproduce: 1.yum update 2. 3. Actual results: Missing Gnome 3 Desktop environment Expected results: Gnome 3 Desktop Additional info: I have no top panel, no wing panels and no alt F2 functions..
Additional info on this ... This continues to happen A solution is as follows... Terminal run gnome-shell --replace This may or may not fix it at that time... If it does not, logout and log back in.. If it is not corrected this time, log out and log back in again and usually that is all it takes..
This is most likely caused by some sort of broken configuration in your account. Try: rm ~/.config/gnome-session/saved-session/* to get rid of any saved session you might have and see if that fixes it.
Dan - I will do this at your request. I should have also mentioned above that this is not a constant every boot thing.. I can boot several times in a row and never see it, but then see it 5 times in a row... I rebooted after removing the config/gnome-session/saved-session/* and the very same thing is going on... I have to log out and back in once or perhaps twice after running gnome-shell --replace
I am starting to think it is a timing issue.. I am going to reboot 5 times and wait 2 minutes after the login screen appears and then 5 times I will log in immediately .. and will report back I also saw this smae thing on this machine with both the stock nouveau drivers and the nVidia drivers I have since changed to
Not a timing issue as I suspected... and now it is happening all the time... I have to run gnome-shell --replace every restart and then log out and back in before I get the shell I tried deleting the files from saved-sessions, 1, 2 and all and nothing I did made a difference.
I was actually able to get gnome-shell --replace to run from terminal without logging out and have captured some debug information (I hope) Gtk-Message: Failed to load module "pk-gtk-module" JS LOG: GNOME Shell started at Wed Apr 20 2011 19:33:25 GMT-0500 (CDT) Window manager warning: Log level 16: STACK_OP_REMOVE: window 0x158 not in stack (gnome-shell:8664): GdmUser-WARNING **: Unable to parse history: (null) 11 ============================================================================ Cairo-Dock version: 2.3.0~0rc1 Compiled date: Mar 4 2011 11:58:14 Running with OpenGL: 1 ============================================================================ iGLAnimationDeltaT: 30 *** Check for cairo-desklet icon Firefox Web Browser inserted (0.00) icon Oracle VM VirtualBox inserted (0.00) icon XChat IRC inserted (0.00) icon Remote Desktop Viewer inserted (0.00) icon Files inserted (0.00) icon gmusicbrowser inserted (0.00) icon Terminal inserted (0.00) icon Grsync inserted (0.00) warning : (/builddir/build/BUILD/cairo-dock-2.3.0/cairo-dock/src/gldit/cairo-dock-packages.c:cairo_dock_list_packages:699) while listing user packages in '/home/vastonef15/.config/cairo-dock/third-party' : Error opening directory '/home/vastonef15/.config/cairo-dock/third-party': No such file or directory icon Applications Menu inserted (0.00) check: set command 'gnome-terminal' to appli vastonef15@fedora-phenom966:~ Window manager warning: Got a request to focus 0x100008f (Gnome 3? -) with a timestamp of 0. Additional information... I completely rebuilt F15 and am now using nouveau.. And the problem persists A new message in terminal when I had to manually start it with gnome-shell --replace ** (ck-history:2746): WARNING **: Error opening /var/log/ConsoleKit/history (Permission denied)
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version' of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX. (Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.) Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on "Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that version of Fedora. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
