I had never run GIMP on this system or user ID before (it wasn't installed). So I installed GIMP, which went fine. It just won't start. This system experienced hardware problems shortly after this bug was created. Those same hardware problems created issues with other applications running on the system. So, I believe the issue was hardware related. That old system is now gone because it was in such bad shape anyway. Closing this bug.
