Description Tomasz 2011-05-08 04:28:48 UTC
Description of problem:
Booting from USB install disk the system will completely crash. Unable to maintain an SSH session, change VTs, or otherwise interact with the system. It simply freezes completely.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Fedora 15 and updates up to 2011-05-07

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Boot from USB install disk for F15 using standard graphics mode (not VESA plain graphics).
2. Run some apps, move some windows
3. Cry as the system halts

Actual results:
System freeze.

Expected results:
No system freeze.

Additional info:
I have looked through the standard logs in /var/log and there is no information from the time of the crash pertaining to any faults. I'm relatively inexperienced so if there are other ways to start debug modes and gather more data I'd appreciate being gently pointed in the right direction.

Comment 1 Tomasz 2011-05-08 04:33:28 UTC
Futher information. I successfully installed the system via VESA mode and performed all system updates. Behaviour is unchanged.

I also tried installing the NVIDIA proprietary driver from rpmfusion, but X complains that it can't find the NVIDIA driver.

Using the VESA driver in higher resolutions also triggers the freeze. Running in basic video mode (low rez) appears to be stable.

Some more notes about the bug. It manifests with the use of all drivers that I've tried: VESA, nouveau, and the proprietary NVIDIA driver. This obviously leads me to suspect it's not a driver issue.

One way to trigger the freeze is to open up a standard window (I usually do this with a Google Chrome browser window) and drag the bottom right corner out to enlarge it. Before releasing the mouse button, drag it back in toward the upper left to shrink the window. The moment you start shrinking, the system locks up. It seems to crash more reliably when you stretch the window a lot than if you just enlarge a small window by a small amount.

Comment 9 Ben Skeggs 2011-05-29 23:09:33 UTC
I agree. Reassigning to the X server as it's the next likely candidate.

Comment 10 Dave Airlie 2012-02-11 17:47:56 UTC
sounds like it could be a hardware issue. the server can't lockup the system with vesa unless the hardware falls over.

Comment 11 Tomasz 2012-02-13 18:06:43 UTC
i would normally agree, but i hesitate to confirm because the system exhibits no such behaviour when running at the same resolution on Windows 7 or Vista.

Comment 12 Tomasz 2012-02-13 18:09:16 UTC
ubuntu 11.04 and prior releases were also stable at 2560x1600.

Comment 13 Dave Airlie 2012-02-13 19:11:48 UTC
so the nvidia binary is stable in old distros? and isn't stable in new?

Comment 14 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-07 14:41:51 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
