Description of problem: When bringing an interface up that uses the bnx2x driver, a message is logged in dmesg. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): linux-firmware-20110304-1.fc15.noarch How reproducible: always Steps to Reproduce: 1. modprobe bnx2x 2. bring up interface (ip l set dev eth7 up) 3. Actual results: The ip command prints: RTNETLINK answers: No such file or directory and dmesg has: [ 26.683564] [bnx2x_init_firmware:9326(eth7)]Can't load firmware file bnx2x/bnx2x-e1-6.2.5.0.fw [ 26.683566] [bnx2x_nic_load:1315(eth7)]Error loading firmware Expected results: Interface comes up Additional info: I extracted the firmware file from this rpm: http://pkgs.org/opensuse-factory/opensuse-oss-x86_64/kernel-default-2.6.38-4.2.x86_64.rpm.html and placed it in /lib/firmware/bnx2x/bnx2x-e1-6.2.5.0.fw , and the interface worked as expected. Maybe this is a packaging issue?
No, the driver is just broken. The authors seem to have completely failed to submit their firmware to the linux-firmware tree (although it's *possible* that I missed the submission, but I don't think so). Perhaps part of the problem is that the firmware has been added alongside the unused legacy files in the kernel source tree when it should not have been; maybe that has confused the driver authors into thinking they were doing the right thing? That patch should have been *rejected*.
This is still broken on Fedora 15 (kernel 2.6.40.3-0). bnx2x driver fails to load firmware "bnx2x/bnx2x-e1-6.2.9.0.fw". The latest F15 linux-firmware package does not contain the firmware (nor the bnx2x subdirectory). > rpm -qlp linux-firmware-20110601-1.fc15.noarch | grep bnx2x /lib/firmware/bnx2x-e1-4.8.53.0.fw /lib/firmware/bnx2x-e1-5.2.13.0.fw /lib/firmware/bnx2x-e1-5.2.7.0.fw /lib/firmware/bnx2x-e1h-4.8.53.0.fw /lib/firmware/bnx2x-e1h-5.2.13.0.fw /lib/firmware/bnx2x-e1h-5.2.7.0.fw The F16/F17 builds from Koji show newer firmware (in the bnx2x subdir), but no such update has been made to the F15 release: (from F16 Koji build) > rpm -qlp linux-firmware-20110731-2.fc16.noarch.rpm | grep bnx2x /lib/firmware/bnx2x /lib/firmware/bnx2x-e1-4.8.53.0.fw /lib/firmware/bnx2x-e1-5.2.13.0.fw /lib/firmware/bnx2x-e1-5.2.7.0.fw /lib/firmware/bnx2x-e1h-4.8.53.0.fw /lib/firmware/bnx2x-e1h-5.2.13.0.fw /lib/firmware/bnx2x-e1h-5.2.7.0.fw /lib/firmware/bnx2x/bnx2x-e1-7.0.20.0.fw /lib/firmware/bnx2x/bnx2x-e1-7.0.23.0.fw /lib/firmware/bnx2x/bnx2x-e1h-7.0.20.0.fw /lib/firmware/bnx2x/bnx2x-e1h-7.0.23.0.fw /lib/firmware/bnx2x/bnx2x-e2-7.0.20.0.fw /lib/firmware/bnx2x/bnx2x-e2-7.0.23.0.fw
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version' of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX. (Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.) Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on "Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that version of Fedora. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
