Created attachment 498950 [details] screencast of the non-reproduction Thanks for the bug report. We have reviewed the information you have provided above, and there is some additional information we require that will be helpful in our diagnosis of this issue. I cannot reproduce here with firefox-4.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 (see the attached screenshot). So, we need more information to be able to reproduce the issue here. 1) Are you able to reproduce this when running firefox in the safe mode (i.e., run it with parameter -safe-mode on the command line) 2) Are you able to reproduce the problem with the upstream binary from http://www.firefox.com/? 3) Are you able to reproduce the problem with a fresh profile? Thank you for your cooperation and helping to make Fedora more awesome! We will review this issue again once you've had a chance to attach this information. Thanks in advance.
(In reply to comment #1) > 1) Are you able to reproduce this when running firefox in the safe mode (i.e., > run it with parameter -safe-mode on the command line) I ran it with the parameter, but did not check any of the options, so as to leave my configurations intact. I have no extensions installed and have only gecko media player, iced tea, nspluginwrapper, openoffice, skype buttons for kopete and shocwave flash experimental 10.2 for x86_64 plugins installed. Despite safe mode, the pop-up occurred again. > 2) Are you able to reproduce the problem with the upstream binary from > http://www.firefox.com/? I have not tried it, but a while back I learned that the binary is not x86_64, so I was not able to use it. Is that still the case? > 3) Are you able to reproduce the problem with a fresh profile? I will give that a try later and report back. *** Also, I should add that I got another pop-up this morning, this time while using google/reader. I subscribe to spiegel.de, focus.de and zeit.de. I clicked on the tab to display the feed entries and a pop-up appeared without me even clicking one of the entries in the feed (I don't recall which one it was, of the 3 I just named).

OK, I just tried it with a fresh profile and it still occurs on the zap2it.com tv listing site. When I click a listing for program information, a pop-up from c5.zedo.com appears. It only happens once. When I close the tab and open the site in a new tab, then it happens once again.
(In reply to comment #1) > I cannot reproduce here with firefox-4.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 (see the attached > screenshot). I just looked at your screenshot and I see the bar that appears at the top, stating that the pop-up was blocked. I have never seen this bar appear on my browser, although I do know it from firefox 3 back in the days of fedora 12 or 13 or so.

Correction: the bar is there and it says that firefox blocked a pop-up, but the pop-up appear anyway. Also, I had said earlier (in Comment 3) that the pop-up appears each time I open the site in a new tab. I believe that is incorrect: I think it is one time I visit the site in firefox. Also, I tested in konqueror, and the pop-ups don't appear.
There must be something wrong somewhere in your settings. Could you please make a screenshot of the small dialog window "Exceptions" in Edit/Preferences/Content just to be sure what your settings are? Alternatively, go to your Profile (http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder#Where_is_my_profile_folder.3F) and run this command (that is one line): sqlite3 permissions.sqlite 'select * from moz_hosts;'|grep -E 'zap2it\.com|zedo\.com' What is the output of this command? Thank you
(In reply to comment #6) > Could you please make > a screenshot of the small dialog window "Exceptions" in > Edit/Preferences/Content just to be sure what your settings are? There's absolutely nothing in there. I already checked that a long time ago. > go to your Profile... and run this command: > > sqlite3 permissions.sqlite 'select * from moz_hosts;'|grep -E 'zap2it\.com|zedo\.com' There is absolutely no output when I run the command as given. When I prefix the command with ./, then it prints: bash: ./sqlite3: No such file or directory I am not clear on which file the command is referring to, but there IS a file called permissions.sqlite!
I just checked the site again. As soon as I go to the site, a bar at the top appears that a pop-up was blocked and no pop-up appears, however, as soon as I click on a program link to get program information, the zedo pop-up appears.
(In reply to comment #7) > When I prefix the command with ./, then it prints: > > bash: ./sqlite3: No such file or directory > Silly me [blush]. It just hit me that prefixing ./ will try to run a command in the current directory, so of course it would not be found in my mozilla user profile directory.
> Silly me [blush]. It just hit me that prefixing ./ will try to run a command in > the current directory, so of course it would not be found in my mozilla user > profile directory. Don't blush and could you please reply to the original question in comment 6, please? Thank you

There is just a blank line after running the command and the next command prompt (I already stated that in comment 7).
Created attachment 501365 [details] proof required for comment #6 I have never entered any site in here and it is empty.
This is what the output looks like (my prompt shows the current working directory): ~/.mozilla/firefox/scrambled.default sqlite3 permissions.sqlite 'select * from moz_hosts;'|grep -E 'zap2it\.com|zedo\.com' ~/.mozilla/firefox/scrambled.default
Back to basics: (In reply to comment #2) > > 2) Are you able to reproduce the problem with the upstream binary from > > http://www.firefox.com/? > > I have not tried it, but a while back I learned that the binary is not x86_64, > so I was not able to use it. Is that still the case? 64bit binaries are available at ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/4.0.1/linux-x86_64/ Could you try with this binary (backup ~/.mozilla/firefox first, just to be sure), please? What happens? THank you
(In reply to comment #14) > 64bit binaries are available at > ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/4.0.1/linux-x86_64/ > > Could you try with this binary (backup ~/.mozilla/firefox first, just to be > sure) I unpacked the b2zipped tarball into /opt and ran: /opt/firefox/firefox & It is running right now. I went to the dastardly site and the same behaviour occurred: the popup appeared, just like always.
OK, then it is our problem. Reassigning to developers.
Update: I was just reading an article on techradar.com that I got to via a link from somewhere, when I decided to click their logo to see their front page, and... a pop-up appeared!
Update: I upgraded to firefox 5 yesterday and just a second ago I was reading a 2-page article on techradar. When I pressed the next button for the second page of the article, a pop-up appeared.
I just had another shocking pop-up experience. I was reading an article on focus.de and as I was reading, I absentmindedly highlighted a word. Immediately, a pop-up box appeared with the addressbar showing www2.mpnrs.com/maxx/.... I thought perhaps it was a dictionary function, so I waited for the contents to develop, and it turned out to be an advertisement for the Bank of Scotland.
Yet another shocker: pop-ups from catholic.org! When one opens the page, it opens up with a pop-up (no need to click anything). Then, when one closes the pop-up, a new pop-up appears. firefox-5.0-2.fc15
I still get popups from various sites using: firefox-7.0.1-1.fc16.x86_64
The problem is as rampant as ever. Try reading an article on catholic.org (I subscribe to an rss feed and open a new window from the feed, but I think it happens when clicking from the main site, too). I have: firefox-8.0-3.fc16.x86_64.
Housecleaning. This bug is so old that the fedora version, kde version and firefox versions have all changed. I will reopen again, if I notice more problems than those already described, which have not yet been resolved.
