Gnome shell sometimes freezes because of various problems (mostly post-resume). I usually fixed this by switching to a VT and issuing killall gnome-shell. Formerly, this helped to restart gnome-shell. Recently, gnome-shell started freezing so deep that SIGTERM was not enough. So I started using killall -9 gnome-shell. But it doesn't come back. Reproducible: always How to reproduce: Issue killall gnome-shell or killall -9 gnome-shell from a GUI terminal or a VT Expected result: gnome-shell terminates and then gets started again Actual result: gnome-shell terminates without restarting
As a workaround, I'm calling gnome-shell with DISPLAY=:0.0 by user from a VT.
