its worth noting that about an hour after the thunderbird crash that the update-applet showed up on the applet bar. that is probably random but over time it seems like a lot of issues seem to happen in close proximity to the update icon popping up.
i just retried the paste of the text/graphics that seemed to crash the thunderbird email i had been editing and it didnt cause any problem. so i still wonder if the issue was related to the update-applet icon appearance. this is something that was in var log messages from the approximate time of the thunderbird crash: May 20 21:15:13 localhost kernel: [170610.886040] sensors-applet[2208]: segfault at 30 ip 0000003f1220a997 sp 00007fffa8b19c80 error 4 in libpanel-applet-2.so.0.2.72[3f12 200000+e000]
