Description of problem: I have been unsuccessful at adding a network printer on a freshly installed F15. When attempting to add a printer with the gnome-control-center, the add dialog seems to be unresponsive. The throbber freezes after about a second. When running gnome-control-center from the command line, I get the following error message as soon as I activate the add dialog: (gnome-control-center:3207): printers-cc-panel-WARNING **: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name :1.192 was not provided by any .service files Furthermore, I get the following messages in /var/log/messages at the same time: May 25 22:39:03 localhost dbus: [system] Activating service name='org.opensuse.CupsPkHelper.Mechanism' (using servicehelper) May 25 22:39:03 localhost dbus: [system] Successfully activated service 'org.opensuse.CupsPkHelper.Mechanism' May 25 22:39:03 localhost kernel: [23345.247255] cups-pk-helper-[3266]: segfault at c ip 080506b1 sp bf981850 error 4 in cups-pk-helper-mechanism[8048000+d000] May 25 22:39:03 localhost abrt[3267]: saved core dump of pid 3266 (/usr/libexec/cups-pk-helper-mechanism) to /var/spool/abrt/ccpp-2011-05-25-22:39:03-3266.new/coredump (864256 bytes) May 25 22:39:03 localhost abrtd: Directory 'ccpp-2011-05-25-22:39:03-3266' creation detected May 25 22:39:04 localhost abrtd: Dump directory is a duplicate of /var/spool/abrt/ccpp-2011-05-25-16:03:30-1777 May 25 22:39:04 localhost abrtd: Deleting dump directory ccpp-2011-05-25-22:39:03-3266 (dup of ccpp-2011-05-25-16:03:30-1777), sending dbus signal Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): control-center-3.0.1.1-5.fc15.i686 How reproducible: Every time. Steps to Reproduce: 1. invoke gnome-control-center 2. select printers 3. unlock 4. push "plus" button Actual results: Throbber freezes after about a second. I cannot locate my network printers. When typing in their IP address nothing happens. Expected results: Easily locate and add my printers. Additional info:
Having same issue with this feature, Running Fedora 15 64 bit Was able to add printer using: Applications Other Printing (system-config-printer) After that app (system-config-printer) asked to modify the firewall I added the printer using that app. Tried the gnome-control-center once more, after firewall changes it was able to locate some printer, but not by address, plus I could not add any, they are just there Hope this help get this resolved.
I had the same problem with a fresh F15 What I did was to go into CUPS (http://localhost:631/ and 'add printer' the old way. After the printer was added, it was then available in the 'System Settings'->Printers This is probably not what the F15 developers had in mind, but it works.
o, ode to regression testing: ibid comment#1, still there as of control-center-1:3.0.1.1-6.fc15 (x86_64)
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version' of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX. (Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.) Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on "Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that version of Fedora. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
