Description Slobodan Sredojevic 2011-05-27 01:25:05 UTC
Created attachment 501218 [details]
hopefully appropriate part of /var/log/messages after the crash

Description of problem:
Found this by accident - I use a LG external USB 2.0 dvd drive. While a cd media was in tray, I pulled usb cable out and experienced bug where gnome-shell had disappeared, still mouse was functional and visible but I was moved into console mode with several lines printed (I found them in /var/log/messages and posted as attachment here). alt+f1 can't bring gnome-shell back, other alt+fX worked, but if I wait about 20 seconds ctrl+alt+f1 brings me back to the gnome-shell.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
2.6.38.6-27.fc15.x86_64

How reproducible:
Always when disc *is* in tray. It doesn't happen when disc *is not inserted*.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Connect an external CD/DVD drive
2. Insert media into the tray, wait until it gets mounted
3. Plug out usb cable

Additional info:
Some lines appear/append after gnome-shell is restored in gnome-terminal as it was started before unplugging, hope these will help, too.

I observe similar behavour with the external USB hard disk. In my case screen went blank and system is not responding to any attempts to switch to another console or login remotely. Had to power off the PC.

I am on
Linux sports.localdomain 2.6.35.14-96.fc14.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Sep 1 11:59:56 UTC 2011 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

I had no problems with unmount in previous versions of the system - so i guess it has something to do with the kernel update (may not be the latest one).

I used left mouse click and then 'Safely Remove USB' or something of that sort to unmount the drive when that happened.

Hope this helps.

Could you please try this update and see if the problems recreate:

https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/kernel-2.6.40.6-0.fc15

We've added another possible fix for this issue from upstream.

Thanks!

Reported bug is fixed (tried several times with unplugging where media was and wasn't in tray) in 3.1.0-0.rc8.git0.0.fc16.x86_64 as F16beta w/updates-testing is what I am using for a few weeks now.

However, I can test build you supplied on another machine, where F15 sits, tomorrow morning. I guess this bug/behavior is not specific to my home pc on which I experienced bug, am I right?

It is somewhat timing related, so there are no guarantees it will happen on another machine. It is definitely worth trying though.

On affected machine, where I installed F15 again, results are:

2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64 that is shipped on install media:
when media is in: crash happened
when media is out: no crash

yum upgrade kernel (to 2.6.40.6-0.fc15.x86_64 as in your link) gave:
when media is in: no crash
when media is out: no crash :) Thanks!
