Description Sean C. Murphy 2011-05-27 18:54:03 UTC
Description of problem:

Change in RHN DUP driver download process has resulted in significant difficulty in carrying-out simple driver downloads. Poor user experience.

Emulex requires a URL link from emulex.com for our mutual customers to conduct simple driver update downloads

RH-outlined Process:
> 1. Log in to RHN at http://rhn.redhat.com
> 2. Click the "Download Software" image at the left of the window
> 3. Choose the "Red Hat Enterprise Linux (v. 5 for 32-bit x86)" link for
> 32-bit packages and/or the "Red Hat Enterprise Linux (v. 5 for 64-bit
> x86_64)" link for 64-bit packages.
> 4. Scroll down and click "View ISO Images for Older Releases"
> 5. Click "Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 Server (x86)" if you followed the
> 32-bit link in step 3, or "Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5 Server
> (AMD64/Intel EM64T)" if you followed the 64-bit link in step 3.
> 6. Click on the ISO file you need. Those available include:

Couple things:

1) Is there anything we can do with adding search keywords to the links, such that the click from Emulex.com gets the user to right page?
2) When I go repeatedly to: https://rhn.redhat.com/rhn/software/channel/downloads/Download.do?cid=6957, for example, I continue to reach the destination. Do these really expire (the only thing I see encoded in the URL is the "cid")? If not, we'd do a touch better to start here, and ELX add the `2 step` instructions.
3) Failing all this, or anything else creative we could bring to bear, to aid the user experience, we may have to post the DUP's on Emulex.com.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Simply attempt to locate DUD ISO's for driver download.
2.

Channel Ids (the cid= link you mention) are forever, and go straight to the channel whose downloads you want to get to.

It's only the actual ISO download links that are timebombed - the one labelled "Driver Update Disk (dd-be2iscsi-rhel5u5-2.0.549.0-2.el5_5.x86_64.iso)", for example, is

https://content-web.rhn.redhat.com/rhn/isos/RHEL-5.5-DUP/rhel-x86_64-server-5/dd-be2iscsi-rhel5u5-2.0.549.0-2.el5_5.x86_64.iso?__gda__=<timestamp>_<hex-timebomb-here>&ext=.iso

That's the link that is only good for a short period.

So, with no code change, the instructions could link straight to the desired channel-download pages, which helps...some.

Anything beyond that takes feature/code changes.

As you may already be aware, Red Hat is transitioning from the Red Hat Network (RHN) hosted interface to the Red Hat Subscription Management (RHSM) interface in July 2017. Red Hat has invested in and seen success from RHN for many years, and used that experience to build more robust technologies like RHSM.

If you have not yet migrated your RHN systems to RHSM or you are a Red Hat Satellite customer, please review the information from. https://access.redhat.com/products/red-hat-subscription-management#migration.

Since we are shutting down RHN, no further actions will be taken with this bug or enhancement request. You can find additional information at RHSM product page (https://access.redhat.com/products/red-hat-subscription-management). If you have further questions, please contact support (https://access.redhat.com/products/red-hat-subscription-management#support).
