comment:
:Crash occurs when trying to connect to a WPA2 protected wireless network after installing drivers from ralink website.
:Device is a Linksys WUSB600N V2, which uses RT3572USB driver / kernel module:
:Bus 001 Device 004: ID 1737:0079 Linksys WUSB600N Wireless-N USB Network Adapter with Dual-Band ver. 2
:
:Install ralink's driver from http://www.ralink.com.tw/support.php?s=2
:RT3572USB 04/27/2011 2.5.0.0
:
:Driver install process:
:
:1. Extract the driver and make following alterations:
:
:Change following lines from "n" to "y" in: os/linux/config.mk
:
:HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT=n to HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT=y
:HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT=n to HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT=y
:HAS_LED_CONTROL_SUPPORT=y
:
:
:Add to: common/rtusb_dev_id.c
:
:{USB_DEVICE(01737,00079)}, /* Linksys WUSB600N v2 */
:
:Run make, then make install as root
:
:Installs fine.
:
:Picks up wrong module (states "firmware missing") unless the following is added to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
:
:# blacklist rt2x00 so that rt3572sta will work
:blacklist rt2800usb
:blacklist rt2800lib
:blacklist rt2x00usb
:blacklist rt2x00lib
:
:
:Worked fine for first two boots, then did not work again. Tested with the latest kernel and with original kernel packaged with DVD x86_64 install. Tested with current and previous version of NetworkManager.
:
:Worked fine on an NC 10 laptop using i686 version on Fedora 15.
:
:Same issues on Fedora 14, hence the upgrade to 15 to see if issue was resolved.
:
:After crash, system hangs and needs to be rebooted.

Comment 1 Rob Whalley 2011-06-05 15:14:36 UTC
Driver version tested was:
RT3572USB 04/27/2011 2.5.0.0

Looking at various internet threads it seems like this version is quite problematic, but unfortunately ralink do not put older versions on their site.

On the second link above, there is a comments thread and it looks like a different user was having a similar crash: http://pastebin.com/fDrD3hit
Looks like they were running 2.6.38-8-generic #42-Ubuntu Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. P67A-UD4-B3/P67A-UD4-B3.

As noted above, same error encountered on Fedora 14. For reference, the kernels I have tested on are:

2.6.35.13-91.fc14.x86_64
2.6.38.6-26.rc1.fc15.x86_64
2.6.38.6-27.fc15.x86_64

The kernel version of the successful tests done on i686 Samsung NC10 using same setup method was:

2.6.38.6-27.fc15.i686.pae
