Description of problem: Using a fully pathced/updated Fedora 15 install and the Nautilus file manager... When I select/highlight a file using the mouse (single left click), and then press the delete key, nothing happens. How reproducible: Always. Steps to Reproduce: 1. Open nautalis window, browse to a directory with a file. 2. Highlight a file (I used the mouse, keyboard shortcuts probably work too) 3. Press the delete key on the keyboard. Actual results: Nothing. Expected results: File should be moved to the Trash.
Shift + delete seems to work for permanently deleting a file (skipping the Trash). I can also right click on a file and select 'move to trash', but that's no substitute for the delete key working.
Not a bug, it's by design. To prevent users from accidentally deleting files, the keyboard combination has changed to ctrl+delete. -- Fedora Bugzappers volunteer triage team https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers
This is a poor design decision for at least two reasons: 1) The delete key deleting a file is a standard feature of any file browser. When the delete key doesn't work, users (like me) are going to get frustrated. No one knows to use ctrl+delete. It is commonly expected that the delete key will work. 2) There's a trash can. If a file is accidentally deleted, there's a way to get it back. If it's really a problem, bring back the "Are you sure you want to delete these 13 files?" dialog.
Whether or not this is a good design decision should be discussed upstream. Here's the upstream bug (sorry for not linking it earlier, I couldn't find it when I commented): https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=648658 -- Fedora Bugzappers volunteer triage team https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers
