Description wes hayutin 2011-07-07 01:54:04 UTC
I suspect most developers tried this on fedora as did I and had success building vmware images w/ oz on Fedora.

It seems if RHEL 6.1 is the libvirt host.. the oz build dies..

My rhel box.. this box that the bug was written for.. :(

root@hp-dl360g5-01 ~]# virsh capabilities | grep hvm
[root@hp-dl360g5-01 ~]#

I would guess this is not a bug.. as the guest install requires hvm..
I have not seen this error before.. do we need to doc I was only previously aware of a require for either
vmx
or
svm

Leaving on dev so they can weigh in on the release notes.. :)

This is probably one of two things:

1) Virtualization support is disabled in the BIOS. If this is the case, you need to enable the support in the BIOS, then poweroff the machine, then start it back up.

2) The qemu-kvm package is not installed. If this is the case, you need to install the qemu-kvm package, then restart libvirtd.

Both of the above should probably be documented as necessary to get this working.

assigning to jclift

Comment 5 wes hayutin 2011-07-11 00:36:40 UTC
jclift..
executing the following command will show the user if the running os can us libvirt..

[root@dell-pe2950-01 ~]# virsh capabilities | grep hvm
    <os_type>hvm</os_type>
    <os_type>hvm</os_type>
[root@dell-pe2950-01 ~]#

If you think this doc would be redundant, we can probably close the bug. It may fit in for our release notes.

BZ 719486 - Hardware virtualization support required
Virtualization support needs to be enabled in hardware bios running Aeolus.
One way to check for this is to see the hvm support when running 'virsh capabilities' command line tool:
[root@localhost ~]# virsh capabilities | grep hvm
  hvm
  hvm
[root@localhost ~]#

As follow up info, the hardware virtualization support isn't needed for all cloud targets. EC2 image building works fine without it, whereas vSphere images will die as indicated above.

For now, the "Requirements" page on the Aeolus site has been updated to include this info:

http://www.aeolusproject.org/requirements.html

Note that this isn't quite true. It depends on your configuration. If you are configured for snapshot-style EC2 builds, then you do not need hardware virtualization. If you are configured for upload-style EC2 builds, then you do need hardware virtualization. The matrix is:

EC2-upload, vsphere, rhevm, condorcloud builds -> hardware virt required
EC2-snapshot, rackspace builds -> hardware virt not required

Out-of-the-box, I believe that we are configured for EC2-snapshot style builds, so you do not need hardware virt.

Thanks Justin, Chris!!

verified.. not sure if its needed for doc or not.. but its possible for a box to have the right flags when you cat /proc/cpu but the virt feature is turned off in bios.

This can be determined by : dmesg | grep kvm
We may or may not want to add this.. but really I think its up to the user to figure that out :)
