Workaround: installation of libpipeline-1.2.0 from rawhide stops the crash. Was the F15 version of man-db built with libpipeline and no dependency noted?
Disregard comment 3... worked once, then began segfaulting again. No two segfaults appear the same... looks like memory corruption. Will try digging deeper as time permits.
Looks like malloc arena corruption. Try running it under valgrind, which is the usual tool for debugging such things; it should report when mandb actually does something wrong rather than when malloc happens to notice.
As is typical, much harder to crash with valgrind. I did manage to get this while running with valgrind (fourth try): *** glibc detected *** man-db-2.5.9/src/.libs/lt-mandb: corrupted double-linked list: 0x0000000000b95570 *** This was to stderr. valgrind reported no errors.
