Description of problem:
Dell Inspiron 8000 with Pentium III Coppermine 1.0GHz, kernel 2.4.11 and 2.4.12,
fail to update the IA32 microcode.

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Boot, or 
2.run /sbin/microcode_ctl -u

Actual Results:  1:
Applying Intel IA32 Microcode update:                      [FAILED]

2:
/sbin/microcode_ctl: writing microcode (length: 141312)
/sbin/microcode_ctl: error writing to '/dev/cpu/0/microcode' errno=5
(Input/output error)
/sbin/microcode_ctl: there may be messages from the driver in your system log.


Expected Results:  It works on all my other machines.

Additional info:

/var/log/messages says:
Aug 21 04:15:51 livre kernel: microcode: CPU0 no microcode found! (sig=68a,
pflags=32)
Aug 21 04:15:51 livre microcode_ctl: microcode_ctl startup failed
