Note: The Guvnor changes cannot be started until https://issues.jboss.org/browse/JBRULES-2671 is complete. Ideally this BZ should be split into two as JBRULES-2671 will be completed by the drools-core team whereas GUVNOR-657 by the guvnor-webapp team.
I'm adding qe_ack - if we have the fix ready, there's no reason for it not to be in 5.3.

Assigned this one to etirelli as the Guvnor changes are now under #753077.
The bug has been approved for 5.3. Feel free to push the fix to the branch.
Ok, fix backported to 5.3.x branch.
Relational operators for string are supported. Verified in BRMS 5.3.0 ER1.
Technical note added. If any revisions are required, please edit the "Technical Notes" field accordingly. All revisions will be proofread by the Engineering Content Services team. New Contents: It was previously not possible to use relational operators within Strings. Relational operators are now supported for type String.
