Description of problem: As far as I can tell it never has worked. I can't tell how (whether) this may be related to other bug reports about mics not working, but I'm willing to experiment to help find the problem. I don't know whether this should be a separate bug. I just upgraded to fc 15 and then 16Beta. It appeared that mic was working in 15 (but all sorts of other things caused me to move on). thanks for testing the newer releases. I'm not sure how pulseaudio could be reporting nothing and have audio still work. Perhaps Lennert has some ideas. This still might be a kernel bug, but I'm at a loss to explain it right now.
Now I'm up to 3.1.0-0.rc9.git0.0.fc16.x86_64 You tube sound no longer works. BTW, in gmail video chat settings I see: 1 You don't have a camera... (I did in fedora14) 2 You don't have a microphone... (I did in fedora14) When I look in settings under sound, hardware shows only one, internal audio 1 output/1 input, profile shows a bunch of choices. However, for most of them, test speakers causes the window to disappear. However, when I run from command line to see what's going on: gnome-control-center --overview I get no crashes. I do get a few of these: (gnome-control-center:10991): sound-cc-panel-WARNING **: Default sink stream not found The last two choices under profile, analog stereo output and analog stereo duplex even generate sound when I do test speakers. (The others, starting with digital stereo do not.) Furthermore, the mic seems to work in the input tab. And in the sound effects tab, I hear the samples. Note that the above gnome control center is run as root while the others, from the menus, are run as a user. Maybe I should login as root to get this stuff to work!

I tried logging in as root and running firefox as root. In that case gmail video chat shows both mic and speaker working, but not camera. The difference is the user running X windows. I'd like the camera to work too, but is that part of the sound system?
