Description Mephisto 2011-10-04 23:14:15 UTC
Description of problem:
Ever since the update of compiz to 0.9.5 I'm having an issue with applications suddenly "freezing" on switching application. I never had this issue on pre-0.9.5 versions.
At seemingly random times, an application will stop redrawing its window contents. The application itself keeps working fine. This only seems to happen on switching applications ("alt-tabbing" or clicking the task list), and it is worse for applications that create child windows, and especially bad when applications are maximized. I think it is always reproducible for thunderbird in maximized mode after writing 1 email, but also for example, copying files in nautilus, which causes a progress bar to appear in a new window. But I've seen this with just about any application, except so far for firefox.

Also, the non-redrawing window can not be interacted with, because it is no longer able to take focus. When trying to switch to it, the app will become visible, but trying to click it will cause the application below it to receive clicks, and the titlebar stays grayed out (like for unselected apps) and the task list switches back to the last selected app. The window can still be minimized and restored, but this does not change or fix the issue.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
compiz-0.9.5.0-3.fc15.i686

How reproducible:
Randomly, but some conditions make it worse (such as maximized applications and applications with dialogs/child windows)

Comment 1 Mephisto 2011-10-07 15:40:10 UTC
After a few days of no comment at all on this bug, I went to investigate a bit further and found a way to reliably reproduce it, at least on my system.
I'm using a completely uptodate Fedora 15 with gnome 3 desktop in classic mode with compiz. I can make the bug appear by doing the following:
*) open a terminal (i used gnome-terminal, not sure if it matters)
*) start an application with a gui (e.g. totem)
*) close the application
*) minimize terminal
*) restore terminal
*) try to interact with it. On my system the window stops redrawing and no longer responds to input.

I'd like to restate that it was working fine before the update to 0.9.5.
Too bad I can no longer find the old packages, I would really like 0.9.4.x back, but the old F15 launch version doesn't let me start gnome 3 in classic mode :S

Comment 2 Mephisto 2011-11-13 15:45:33 UTC
This issue is still present on F16. As a workaround I stopped minimizing applications entirely, which made the system somewhat usable (it can still happen with dialog windows), but a bit annoying to work with...

Comment 3 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-07 16:48:49 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
