Description joern 2011-10-21 21:18:50 UTC
Description of problem: When trying to enable an external monitor in
addition to the built-in display of my Dell D830, the desktop locks up.
The built-in display has a resolution of 1680x1050, the external monitor has
a resolution of 1920x1080. Their highest common resolution is 1280x1024.
The monitor make, type and resolution is auto-detected.
I can configure these displays in their full resolution, with the external
monitor above the built-in display, both in KDE and in openbox.
But I'd prefer to use Xfce if I could get it to support my displays properly.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:
1.
Log into the Xfce desktop.
2.
Use the menu on the panel to activate applications menu->preferences->Display .
The built-in display is shown as 'on'
3.
Select the external monitor, and set it to 'on', too.

Actual results:
A popup window appears with

warning:
Selected output not disabled
The selected output must not be disabled, the system would be unusable.

Any attempt to acknowledge or close this popup window is rewarded with
some flickering and the same popup appearing again.
The Desktop is indeed unusable till the system is rebooted.

Expected results:

The external monitor is enabled in addition to the built-in display, and
some means to arrange the relative location of the displays is provided.

Please attach ~/.xsession-errors and /var/log/Xlog.0.log from a session where this happens?

What video card and driver?

gzipped tar of logfiles

I logged into openbox, saw the bugzilla email, logged out and logged into
xfce to reproduce the problem, tried the 'close' button of the popups three
times, then switched to a virtual console to log in as root and tar up the
log files.

Oops, I meant /var/log/messages .

Comment 5 Kevin Fenzi 2011-10-25 16:00:43 UTC
Looks like a intel X driver issue.

See:

[ 1003.588] (EE) intel(0): failed to set mode: Invalid argument

in the X log. It's not able to set the mode with both monitors active. ;(

Comment 6 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-07 19:45:21 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 15 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 15. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '15' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 15 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
