Description nicofo 2011-10-24 20:45:57 UTC
Description of problem:
I tried testing zif packagekit backend following the guide:
http://people.freedesktop.org/~hughsient/zif/howto-pk.htm

1) PackageKit-zif installed
2) gdbus command launched (and even restart Fedora after step 3) to be sure)
3) /etc/PackageKit/PackageKit.conf changed (DefaultBackend=zif instead of DefaultBackend=yum,zif) ; same results with DefaultBackend=auto
=> packagekit doesn't work anymore.
For instance, pkcon says:

$ pkcon refresh
Failed to contact PackageKit: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

kpackagekit is very long to open, and once opened, it doesn't work at all (it just sometimes says "An unknown error happened.").

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
PackageKit-zif-0.6.17-1.fc15.i686
zif-0.1.5-2.fc15.i686

How reproducible:

Steps to Reproduce:

Thank you for your bug report.

We should really add this to the howto, F15's zif is rather old and unsupported. Updating it will require updating PackageKit, and we can't really do this without violating the Updates Policy.

But don't worry, we have a backport repository, if you really want to try zif.
Please test zif from the backport repository, http://repos.fedorapeople.org/repos/kkofler/zif-backport/

If it works, then it's all good.

If you want me to try and see why this happens anyway, please attach the output of the following command to this bug report.

/usr/libexec/packagekitd -v

Zif backend proposes to upgrade to a beta version of Fedora

Thanks for your rapid answer.
I have tested the packages from your repository => OK, it works well !
I have tested with kpackagekit, and I'm pleased to see for instance that the list of repositories appears instantly (that's not the case with yum backend).

2 questions/remarks however:
1) the "updates" view of kpackagekit already proposes to upgrade to fedora16, still beta !! (yum backend doesn't) <see picture attached>
2) the list of repositories is not as complete as the one given by yum backend: some disabled (but not all) repo are missing ("settings" view of kpackagekit) <see pictures below>

Yum backend settings (all repo are listed)

(the "Test Updates" repositories are not listed by zif backend)

I'm glad it works well for you.

About the repository list, try checking the "show origins of debug and development packages" checkbox.
I suspect zif may be marking the -testing repositories as development ones.

Anyway, please report a separate bug for each issue, it makes it easier for us to track those issues.

I'm closing this bug as WONTFIX, because we won't fix it in F15's repositories. I'll add a note about the backport repository to the website.
