Sounds like xfwm4 died or was killed and then you logged out, saving the session without it. ;(

Anything in ~/.xsession-errors from the failed session?

Can you start xfwm4 from a terminal and save the session and it goes back to normal?
(failing that you can rm the session file in ~/.cache/sessions/ and it should go back to a default version that has xfwm4 in it).

Comment 2 sean darcy 2011-11-04 21:36:30 UTC
Nope. Just logged out normally, with save session checked.

Then logged back in. All the windows came up, but no window manager.

And, yes if I rm sessions/xfce4* , it works.

I don't see any ~/.xsession-errors:

ls -a

Comment 3 Kevin Fenzi 2011-11-04 22:03:10 UTC
What display manager are you using? gdm? or are you using startx or the like?

In any case the useful .xsession-errors would have been the one from the session where xfwm4 died, which is long gone. ;(

Comment 4 David Kovalsky 2011-11-23 23:05:00 UTC
Hey Kevin,

I'm experiencing this on both F15 and on just updated F16 too. I'm using gdm and I can reproduce this even on a new account I create in the system (useradd).

I'm attaching .xsession-errors from my home directory in hope there's something useful

Comment 7 Kevin Fenzi 2011-11-23 23:27:13 UTC
Can you provide a:

ls -lRZ ~newuser/.config

and

rpm -q xfwm4

Comment 8 David Kovalsky 2011-11-24 13:24:20 UTC
I'm not able to trigger the condition right now (must be Murphy's Law ...), I guess it's some kind of race. I noticed that this happens when I'm saving a session with many windows open which are often slow to respond (Firefox with many tabs, LibreOffice).

xfwm4-4.8.2-1.fc16.x86_64
(latest & greatest in updates-testing as of right now)

I have SELinux disabled, hope it's relevant even without reproducing the window-manager-gone issue:

Interesting. yeah, perhaps it's a race with applications that take too long to save themselves?
Will dig around some more...

Comment 10 Fedora End Of Life 2013-01-16 23:01:24 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 16 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 16. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '16'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 16's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 16 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" and open it against that version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Still happends from time to time on F17.

I still see this from time to time. Though I must say: while before this was happening at least one a week, now it's closer to once in 2 months.

xfwm4-4.10.1-1.fc18.x86_64

changing release to F18 as that's what I'm running atm

Fedora 18 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2014-01-14. Fedora 18 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. If you
are unable to reopen this bug, please file a new report against the
current release. If you experience problems, please add a comment to this
bug.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
