Description Karel Volný 2011-11-10 12:25:39 UTC
Description of problem:
There's a tradition of matching the graphics to codename.
For example, Fedora 13 "Goddard" features rockets as Robert Goddard was a rocket scientist.
This is broken in F16.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Fedora 16 Verne

How reproducible:
always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. stare at some wallpaper, for example /usr/share/wallpapers/Verne/contents/images/2048x1536.png

Actual results:
impractically shaped vessel with two turbines and a light at the bottom not matching any of Jules Verne's designs on a children coloring book-like background; generally not having anything to do with Verne legacy - he was a visionary also with strong focus on precisely describing wonders of the nature, not a children toy designer

Expected results:
any property from Verne's works, for example Plongeur - like submarine with one screw propeller and the lights on top resembling Nautilus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nautilus_(Verne) ) on a classical linocut background

Additional info:

Aren't you a bit late? This theme has been selected before Alpha and has been up for comments ever since. It's not a rule that we match the name with theme exactly. We draw inspiration from that. In this case from nautilus. Sorry, but I cannot accept this as valid bug. If you have issues, you should have voiced them when we were calling for feedback and design team mailing list is better place for that -- I serve only as a packager in this case.

"Okay, okay! I abase myself. I'm a bad user for not seeking out and following every detail of every open source project that may someday affect my life."

if this is inspired by Nautilus, Verne's Nautilus, then I want to try some of these drugs too ;-)

Well, for release artwork you don't have a choice of complaining afterwards, for good or bad. Once it's released only minor bugs can be fixed, and even though should be caught and fixed before release...

LOL, well, Disney or the Spanish/Japanese guys (have you seen the children series Willy Fog - 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea?) had even wilder imagination ;-) You know, Nautilus is a fictional submarine, thought up in days when most people thought it impossible to sail under the sea, you cannot complain if our artists made the submarine less than apt for sailing ;-)

yep, I know this leads to nowhere, but I just couldn't resist ;-)

fortunately not ... and while I'm glad that even children can use Fedora, I wouldn't be very happy if Fedora, I mean mainstream, not just some spin, would be designed for children (how was the Linus's quote about users' intelligence ...?)

btw, as a child, quite a small child, I've read about ten or fifteen books by Verne, I haven't needed Disney to rework it into series so I could watch it

Nautilus is not that much fictional - it was modelled after the abovementioned Plongeur - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_submarine_Plongeur

also, Verne was very realistic when describing the nature

so seeing some vehicle which doesn't even remotely resemble Plongeur (or HMS Sword, or any other from Verne's fictions) on an unnatural background hurts my eye

this may mean that the artist (and all those who made the decision)

1) was so disrespectful to Verne so that (s)he hasn't even tried to keep the legacy

2) was completely ignorant about Verne's legacy

... while 2 may or may not be a consequence of 1 and 1 may or may not be influenced by 2

either way, I just don't like it :-(
