Description James Boulton 2011-11-13 20:49:00 UTC
Description of problem:

Lyx reports error loading external images

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Lyx Version 2.0.1

How reproducible:

Every time

Steps to Reproduce:
From menu
Insert -> Graphics
Browse to pdf file [Apply]

Actual results:

Error message 'Error converting to loadable image'

Expected results:

The image displayed

Additional info:

This is fixed by installing ImageMagick. I think that Imagemagick should be a dependancy of lyx.

Rex, do you remember any reason for lyx not to require ImageMagick?

Even for compiling the documents lyx uses ImageMagick to convert images to formats that the latex compiler understands.

If there are no reasons I will add ImageMagick in the Requires field.

Comment 2 Rex Dieter 2012-01-06 16:06:05 UTC
No big or good reason, just figured it was something optional and not strictly required for base functionality.

See also bug #186319

short answer: no objection to adding Requires

Comment 3 José Matos 2012-01-07 00:06:50 UTC
We have other requirements that are less essential (in a sense) like tex-dvipost so I think that it is time to bring ImageMagick on board. I took dvipost as an example because it allows to preview math formulas like they show in the final output instead of using lyx rich preview.

ImageMagick is necessary not only to preview but also to typeset for several file formats.

I asked you (Rex) because sometimes there are subtle reasons that are not obvious by readind the spec file.

[Writing this with a sleeping baby on the other arm is a nice (typing) exercise :-) ].

I have added this to rawhide while testing gcc 4.7 and I intend to propagate this to stable releases just with 2.0.3, this is an important but urgent issue. :-)

This bug was fixed in 2.0.2-2, closing it now.
