Description boyobox 2011-11-17 20:17:46 UTC
Description of problem:
My laptop's (ASUS F81SE) ATI Radeon HD 4570 card does not output sound when I choose the HDMI output (rather than the internal speaker's sound card). Moreover, when output is HDMI, when playing video (be it Totem or even Youtube) the playback runs really fast (and no sound, of course).

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
My graphic card:
VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M92 [Mobility Radeon HD 4500/5100 Series]
Its HDMI audio unit:
Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc RV710/730

How reproducible:
I guess you need a system equipped with a Radeon HD 4500/5100. Maybe even other models.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Get a fresh install of Fedora 16
2. Connect to your LCD's HDMI input
3. Go to Displays and turn on the output for your LCD
4. In Sound Settings, Output tab - select RV710/730 HDMI
5. Play a video (with Totem or through youtube)

Actual results:
LCD shows normally.
Video playback runs extremely faster than normal and no sound.
No sound output on any other media.

Expected results:
To get sound to play and normal video playback

Additional info:
Haven't installed any other drivers for ATI video card or sound.

The default upstream is to turn HDMI audio off, as it causes problems on certain cards. Try adding "radeon.audio=1" to your kernel command line

Comment 2 boyobox 2011-11-18 14:57:38 UTC
I copied the entry in /etc/grub2.cfg pasted it as a new entry:

menuentry 'Fedora (3.1.1-1.fc16.i686) with radeon HD fix' --class fedora --class gnu-linux --class gnu --class os {
.
.
.
	linux	/vmlinuz-3.1.1-1.fc16.i686 root=/dev/mapper/vg_kaizoku-lv_root ro pci=nomsi rd.md=0 rd.dm=0 KEYTABLE=us quiet rd.lvm.lv=vg_kaizoku/lv_swap rhgb rd.lvm.lv=vg_kaizoku/lv_root rd.luks=0 SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 LANG=en_US.UTF-8 radeon.audio=1
.
.
.
}

Note the "radeon audio=1" at the end the kernel command.
Result is no change: No audio and speedy video playback.

Thanks for the update.

Unfortunately, still causing the same problem after update. pulseaudio processor utilization over 50% and video skipping.

Turned off HDMI and everything works fine through internal sound card.

Hi all!

Same for x86_64.

Tried to add radeon.audio=1
The system is up-to-date 3.3.0-4.fc16.x86_64

Please, continue to work on this issue.

Comment 9 Mik 2012-03-26 17:28:33 UTC
Sorry, forgot to add, I have Dell Studio Laptop with Radeon 34xx series on board

Comment 10 Josh Boyer 2012-09-04 14:11:53 UTC
Was this resolved with the 3.4 or 3.5 kernel updates?

Comment 11 Dave Jones 2012-10-23 15:25:02 UTC
# Mass update to all open bugs.

Kernel 3.6.2-1.fc16 has just been pushed to updates.
This update is a significant rebase from the previous version.

Please retest with this kernel, and let us know if your problem has been fixed.

In the event that you have upgraded to a newer release and the bug you reported
is still present, please change the version field to the newest release you have
encountered the issue with. Before doing so, please ensure you are testing the
latest kernel update in that release and attach any new and relevant information
you may have gathered.

If you are not the original bug reporter and you still experience this bug,
please file a new report, as it is possible that you may be seeing a
different problem.
(Please don't clone this bug, a fresh bug referencing this bug in the comment is sufficient).

Comment 12 Scott Burch 2012-10-27 03:35:51 UTC
Still not working. Just tested after yum update.

Comment 13 boyobox 2012-11-22 15:24:41 UTC
I think this bug should be closed. I no longer have the specified OS.

Comment 14 Scott Burch 2012-11-22 20:46:49 UTC
I have a work around by using the internal audio instead. I have not tested with newer versions of Fedora.

I'm not concerned if we close this since I think 16 will go out of support soon once 18 is released?

Comment 15 Fedora End Of Life 2013-01-16 14:31:15 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 16 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 16. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '16'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 16's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 16 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" and open it against that version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 16 Fedora End Of Life 2013-02-13 15:34:54 UTC
Fedora 16 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-02-12. Fedora 16 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
