Description John Reiser 2011-11-18 16:29:08 UTC
Description of problem: The system completely locks up when graphics starts. The VGA text console is unchanging, there is no response to mouse or keyboard (including Ctrl-Alt-Del), there is no disk activity for over one minute. Serial console shows nothing. Hardware reset is the only thing recognized.

How reproducible: every time (three times so far)

Steps to Reproduce:
1. boot to multi-user. Or, boot to single user, then issue "startx".
2.
3.

Actual results: Complete system lockup.

Expected results: Normal graphics login screen.

Additional info: Did not hang until "yum update" this morning. "yum downgrade"
of corereponding mesa-* and xorg-* packages [under Rescue mode of DVD] said that only upgrade was available.

I will attach serial console log, Xorg.0.log, tail of yum.log.

Packages updated this morning. System did not lockup before these updates. "yum downgrade <packages>" [via Rescue mode] claims that only upgrade is available.

/var/log/Xorg.1.log

Today's rawhide allows access via ssh.
kernel-PAE-3.2.0-0.rc2.git4.1.fc17.i686

Xorg.[12345].log are present and are the same except for timestamp and VTn.

syslog in /var/log/messages has:

Comment 5 John Reiser 2011-11-22 16:53:31 UTC
The complete graphics hang no longer occurs with today's rawhide:
kernel-PAE-3.2.0-0.rc2.git6.1.fc17.i686

Still crashing often are gnome-shell (bug 756062) and gvfs-fuse (bug 756063).
