Description of problem:
Description of problem:

Note.- All installs were clean installs using the Fedora-16-x86_64-DVD.iso.
Nouveau does not work with nVidia GeForce 8600 GTS card.

The first boot crashes the system after the request to send hardware information. A hardware reset is needed to recover.
After rebooting the system starts issues the message:

<"Could not apply the stared configuration for monitors
none of the selected modes were compatible with the possible modes:
Trying modes for CRTC 351
CRTC 351: trying mode 3120x1050@50Hz with output at 1440x900@50Hz (pass 0)
CRTC 351: trying mode 3120x1050@50Hz with output at 1440x900@50Hz (pass 0)">

then, gnome starts in fallback mode and operates properly but using the vesa driver with the fallback mode limitations.

The same results in four clean installs. The last one was tested with no updates.
Installing nVidea propietory driver does allow gnome3 to work properly.

No difficulties have been experienced in this box when running F15 wiht Nouveau (Box multi-boots)

Bugs 743159, 650544, 679619 and 534141 are simmilar but were reported for F-15. However, I have F-15
mutibooted in this box running Nouveau with no problem.

Comment 1 Adam Williamson 2011-11-24 21:25:10 UTC
is it possible to get the Xorg.0.log from one of the attempts to boot using the nouveau driver? I'm not entirely sure if that's what's in the X.logs so far attached. thanks!

There are two X. logs corresponding to different installs one starts on page 13 and the other starts at page 49. Thanks.

Comment 4 Ben Skeggs 2011-11-24 23:31:48 UTC
Those logs are both from the VESA driver. Can we get the dmesg output, and X logs from attempting to use the nouveau driver please.

Comment 5 Adam Williamson 2011-11-24 23:49:52 UTC
if you had to use 'basic graphics mode' to get Fedora to install, you can make it go back to trying to use nouveau after installation by removing 'nomodeset' from the kernel parameters, and deleting anything in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and/or /etc/X11/xorg.conf .

Thanksgiving is keeping me away (my wife is threatening divorce) will continue tomorrow.

Happy Turkey for every one.

Copy of pertinent logs.

Hope everyone had a wonderfull Thanksgiving.
Adam Williamson's suggestion worked without a hitch. Nouveau and Gnome 3 are working properly. Must say that Grub2 made me dig deep, the documentation is somewhat limited.
The next question is what to do with the bug. The installation still crashes the box at first reboot etc. Attached log copies before and after the first boot. If I can be of any help please let me know.

Thank you all again. Fedora has always had an outstanding group of people.

Comment 9 Fedora End Of Life 2013-01-16 12:28:09 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 16 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 4 (four) weeks from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 16. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '16'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 16's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 16 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" and open it against that version of Fedora.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:

Comment 10 Fedora End Of Life 2013-02-13 12:44:34 UTC
Fedora 16 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2013-02-12. Fedora 16 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
