Newer thinkpads like the x220 have an LED on the keyboard mute button. However, in F16, while the mute button works correctly to mute/unmute, the LED just gets toggled each time you press the key, failing to reflect mutes/unmutes from other causes. Eg, if the system is currently unmuted, and you press the mute button, then the mute LED will light up, and the panel will show the muted speaker icon. But if you then open the volume control in the panel and turn the volume back up, the panel will reflect the volume change, but the mute LED will stay lit. If you then press the mute button again, the volume will be muted, but now the LED will turn off. The kernel thinkpad-acpi docs say: The newer Lenovo models only have firmware mute control, and depend on the main HDA mixer to do volume control (which is done by the operating system). In this case, the volume keys are filtered out for unmute key press (there are some firmware bugs in this area) and delivered as normal key presses to the operating system (thinkpad-acpi is not involved). which hadess says means this is alsa's problem

This issue is still valid for F19. Mute button brings up gnome help dialog.
This bug is just about the mute LED. If the mute button brings up the help dialog for you, that's a completely unrelated bug (and are you sure you're not just hitting F1 at the same time you hit mute?).
Apologies on extending the bug. No I'm sure that I am not hitting F1. I did however go into keyboard settings and remap help to another hot key, but acpi_listen doesnt pickup an event when I hit the mute button. Shall I reference the led issue in another bug report?
